The Reserve Bank of India is the Apex Monetary Authority in India that controls and directs the entire Financial and Banking network in the country. The mere thought of association with such a reputed name was sufficient to send chills down my spine. So, you can imagine the extent of excitement that surpassed me when I finally landed an internship opportunity at the Reserve Bank of India. It was overwhelming!

What is the selection process for doing an internship at the Reserve Bank of India?

The selection process of the Reserve Bank of India was fairly simple and comprised of:

  1. Shortlisting on the basis of Graduation Score

  2. Personal Interview

Post the shortlisting round, there was a Personal Interview that had questions revolving around my Graduation Project. They also quizzed me about the departments in RBI that I was interested to work in. Personally, I believe that the Interview round tried to gauge my inclination and interests rather than bookish knowledge. The clarity of my thought process allowed me to sail through the Reserve Bank of India’s selection process with the utmost ease.

What was my role during my internship?

My project required me to work on the Debt Position Assessment of Indian States and check their sustainability position. For the above-mentioned purpose, I and my team used different fiscal indicators and constructed a Debt Sustainability Index to get a comprehensive view of the true picture. The indicator made a comparison of all the states for a period of the past 17 years. This research-oriented role made it necessary for me to work super-hard to achieve the desired outcome. There was no time to sit back and relax. Although demanding, working on this project was a gratifying experience.

What did I learn from my internship at the Reserve Bank of India?

Doing an internship with the Reserve Bank of India has its own benefits. The journey comes packed with an ample number of learning opportunities and it is up to you to exploit them to your own benefit. Given the domain of my role, I got an exciting opportunity to work on my hard and soft skills. Apart from the project-specific learnings, Stata and Excel, the major value addition came in the form of enhanced Time Management and Multitasking capabilities. Moreover, I also got a chance to attend the seminars addressed by the Honorable Governor, Shri Shaktikanta Das, which was once in a lifetime experience. I certainly could not have asked for anything more!

What is the work culture at the Reserve Bank of India?

To attend my internship at the Reserve Bank of India, I moved to Mumbai. Living in one of the fast-paced cities of the world was a fantastic experience. Traveling via the Mumbai local trains and dodging the crowd to reach the office on time was always full of adventures! I surely nurture an unsaid dream of working with the Reserve Bank of India in the near future.

What did I learn from my mentor during the course of my internship?

My mentor during my internship at the Reserve Bank of India was an epitome of cooperation and dedication. He was deeply impressed by the quality of my work in such a limited time frame. Apart from this, he also taught me the crux of a Research Project right from Data Collection, Data Presentation to Data Analysis. I would not have been able to reach the zenith of my success without his constant guidance and support.

On a concluding note, I wish to share an exciting experience that happened towards the end of my internship. Actually, I had to give a presentation in a round table conference room to a distinguished panel of 20 officials (including the department CGM and GM's). I was hell nervous on D-Day since I had never experienced anything similar to this ever. Anyway, I somehow shed all my inhibitions and went ahead with my presentation. This event turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. I could overcome my fear of Public Speaking. I would thank the Reserve Bank of India for giving me such an enthralling experience.
