How an internship at Keventer Agro Ltd honed my skills in digital marketing | Sarbani’s story

I had a strong determination to embark on a journey where I could cognize the crux of an FMCG industry. So, I was already scouting for opportunities in this sector when luck favored. I got pitched for an interview from Keventer Agro Ltd, a leading food processing company in Eastern India. I have been extremely passionate about the FMCG industry. Getting a chance to understand it up close was a complete blessing. No other better opportunity to hone my skills could have come my way than this!

Shortlisting on the basis of CV

Telephonic Interview

I was shortlisted on the basis of my CV which speaks largely about my ardent interest in the field of food trends research. The second step was a telephonic interview which can be summarized into 2 main questions. I was asked about why marketing entices me and how I would like to fit myself to the organization's requirements. My answers were aligned with my passion for understanding the dynamics of the industry. I talked about how brands have made their way through constant customer loyalty and how marketing has a huge role to play in it. Two days later, I got a call that said that I had been selected for the internship at Keventer Agro Ltd. My joy knew no bounds!

What did I learn during my internship at Keventer Agro Ltd?

During my internship at Keventer Agro Ltd, I had to work on the recently launched Keventer pouch milk. I had to suggest a market expansion strategy of the milk for the premium customer base. For that, I had to work on the ground level through the retail outlets. I had to understand their requirements at the moment. Also, I had the opportunity to interact with a plethora of consumers where I could discern the governing factors behind their choice of milk. I also worked closely with Supply Chain Management to understand where improvements on the manufacturing front can be brought in.

Apart from that, I also worked with the marketing team to understand the digital initiatives and creatives required to shape the buyer persona. Communication and research skills are always enhanced in most internships. I was no exception to that. I honed my digital marketing skills as well. Also, I learnt how to extricate information from people. For that, one has to empathize with the person and understand the individual's problem. In addition, one needs to provide an assurance that the company shall take care of the interests of all.

I live in Kolkata and getting the internship here itself came as a blessing to me. I, thus, did not have to adjust to a new lifestyle. Keventer is on the verge of a huge leap as it is foraying into new market spaces with new products. An opportunity to work at Keventer Agro Ltd would be amazing! It will help me to learn how to build a product market and stabilize it gradually.

To sum up, the experience that I got here was invaluable and helped me to develop in a professional capacity.

What did I learn from my mentor during my internship?

Mentorship is one of the best parts of an internship. Having a confidant mentor with vast industry knowledge and expertise can enrich one in several ways. I can't really express as bullet points, what I have learnt, but the sessions have been eminently reinforcing. A constant hunger for knowledge is what it takes to make it to the top. One has to remain updated with each moment to analyze the ways in which a business can grow.

The most important takeaway is how to choose an industry or organization that has an inclusive clear vision and is holistic towards its approach. You need to understand whether they simply want to reap profits or establish themselves as a brand and fit into needs accordingly. The key is to love the work you do and not the job. Your work should push you to reach excellence with time. Many people sit for hours staring at their laptops. The work should be such that it makes you a productive person. People will want to hire you.

Mention some interesting incidents that happened during my internship?

I often had to wait for the retailers to get free. This was to have an open-ended conversation with them. One day, it was quite hectic and I had been standing there for a long time and was ready to give up. The retailer understood that and made his customers wait just to have a conversation with me. He understood that the organization is taking care of its parties. So, he made it a priority and that was a delightful moment for me.

Another learning curve for me occurred when I was giving my presentation at the office one day. I had incorrectly interpreted data and was completely unknown to this fact. After the entire presentation was over, a senior manager came over to tell me where I went wrong. But he preferred telling it to me privately instead of telling in front of everyone. He knew that it would shatter my confidence. I will forever be indebted to him for understanding my position and being empathetic to me.
