As a part of its efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic, the IIM Kozhikode has initiated a drive to provide households in the neighbouring localities with sanitization kits. The initiative was launched on June 15, by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode. The IIM Kozhikode association will be reaching out to 100 families in the vicinity of the campus as a part of this drive. The drive is in solidarity with the ‘Break-the Chain’ campaign of Govt. of Kerela.
This is not IIM Kozhikode’s first rodeo in fighting against the pandemic. The institute provided the District Administration 50 rooms with double occupancy (100-bed facility) in one of its hostels. The rooms served as a COVID Care Centre for individuals undergoing institutional quarantine.
Along with the sanitization kits distributed, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee also enclosed a personal letter. He wrote,
‘Our commitment to the local community has been at the core of our focus in implementing numerous relief initiatives with the able support from IIM K faculty, staff, students, and our vast alumni network. A humanitarian challenge as enormous as this requires every citizen to rise to the occasion and dutifully play their role as a member of the community. We consider the residents of these neighbouring houses as a vital part of the IIM Kozhikode ecosystem and we will endeavour to nurture, protect, and support them in every way possible.’
IIM Kozhikode had also succeeded in donating almost Rs 1 crore to fight the COVID-19 crisis. Rs 7.09 lakhs alone were raised by the voluntary contribution of a day’s salary from the faculty, including the director and senior staff. Apart from this, the institute contributed to the PM Cares Fund, the Kerela Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) and the alumni association of IIM Kozhikode has also managed to contribute close to Rs 40 lakh.
The initiative of IIM Kozhikode to distribute sanitization kits is not limited to local households. Recently, they also distributed hygiene kits to the Kunnamangalam Police personnel and also contributed towards the Kozhikode Medical College’s Disaster Relief.
