The Formula of IIT Madras; Race Of The Brightest Minds!

When thinking about innovations and experiments, it is hard for IIT Madras to not cross everybody’s mind. The grounds of IIT Madras are unattainable for many, but those who make the cut are often seen to be creating wonders. One of the top institutions of the nation, IIT Madras is a melting point of intellect, creativity, innovation, and imagination.

The institution has given the nation many renowned inventors, adding to that list is Team Raftar— a team of 45 students who launched the first electric formula racing car during an event on the campus. After breaking a sweat for a year and undertaking design, manufacturing, and testing, the team was finally able to launch the formula car RF23.

Team Raftar, one of the competing teams for the Centre For Innovation (CFI), moved away from the traditional Internal Combustion engine model to build an innovative and sustainable technological advancement. RF23 is expected to show significant progress in speed and lap times due to the greater power delivered by an electric drive.

“While the global electric vehicle industry is still in its nascent stage, the potential for growth and advancement in this arena is huge,” claimed Professor V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras.

With their participation in the Formula Bharat event, to be held in January 2023, Team Raftar is set to promote Formula student culture in India. The team desires to become the best Formula Student team in the world.

God speed Team Raftar

The team aims to take their car to the most sought-after Formula Student event— Formula Student Germany, August 2023, to compete with the top teams from across the world for a spot on the podium.

Team Raftar is now preparing to conquer autonomous driving, a concept that offers improved safety, universal access, convenience, efficiency, and low costs compared to conventional vehicles. The team aims to develop first driverless race car by 2025 and participate in the ‘Driverless category’ of Formula Student events.

Team also intends to incorporate India’s first indigenously made processor SHAKTI to attain complete customizability with little to no external dependency. To enable the seamless conversions of EVs to DV, they are zeroing in on cloud storage and processing.
