The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has announced admission to its new M.A. Programmes. Two big changes have been made in the M.A. programmes at IIT Madras this year: along with the existing disciplines, a course in Economics has been added, and instead of the previous 5-year-integrated programmes, the M.A. courses will now be of two years in duration.
IIT-M will offer 25 seats for Indian students under each stream. The newly released MA programmes will be available to international students as well, on a supernumerary basis. The procedure for applications will begin in early 2023 and classes will start in July 2023.

Admission to the two-year M.A. programmes will be based on a soon-to-be-announced entrance examination rather than the previous mode of admission through HSEE. Along with the newly added Economics discipline, admission to existing courses in Development Studies and English Studies streams will also be offered. These programmes will be available beginning with the 2023 academic year.
As stated by IIT-M, the unique aspects of the new programmes include evidence-based policy analyses, the role of technology in shaping socioeconomic development, data science and governance, and engagement with contemporary issues and current affairs such as climate change, sustainability, and urbanization, among others.

In order to face and address the various challenges and issues of the developing world, students must be familiar with such types of humanities and social science exposure. This expanded list of MA programmes will open up new avenues of placement and employability as the students will be trained by domain-specific experts with international readiness.
The MA programme's course curriculum will be restructured to include more current subjects such as Economics of Innovation, Urban Planning and Development, Health Policy, Environmental Humanities, Climate Economics, Technology and Policy, and Computational Linguistics, among others.
The MA programmes have been restructured with the goal to make the programmes accessible to an increased number of students who have completed their undergraduate studies from various disciplines across humanities, commerce, science, engineering, etc.
