Work satisfaction is a major factor during any service one has to derive as part of the package as remuneration. The moment it gets replaced with monetary benefits, the focus will get shifted, and the results will be disastrous. Anyways, after retirement benefits are quite a good compensation, btw.

Within India, they are worshipped because of their contribution to the country . Money was never an object of value in India. Maybe for those who use Indian resources and go abroad for a better life. Tyag is an Indian phenomenon.
