In a joint venture by the UGC-HRDC and the Department of Political Science of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a new online course has been set afloat in human rights and social inclusion. The virtual program is two weeks long and was launched on Monday as a refresher course. Professor Anisur Rahman who is the Director of JMI enlightened the participants and other dignitaries regarding the relevance of a course on human rights in times like these.

Trying to bring sensitisation

The inaugural function for the online course was also held which saw the presence of various teachers and professors from a range of colleges and universities (including JMI). The chief guest of the function was Professor Najma Akhtar, the Vice-Chancellor of JMI. Professor Akhtar emphasized on the way the online course on human rights and social inclusion was designed so that it not only delivers a theoretical and comprehensive understanding to the participants but also aware and sensitizes them accordingly. 

She added that the two-week long course will surely help the teachers in forwarding the same knowledge to their students so that they are well-aware of the tenets of social justice and equality in our country.

Knowing human rights inside out

The Co-ordinator of this course is Professor Bulbul Dhar James, from the Department of Political Science, JMI who briefly outlined the major issues the online course is about to cover in the various sessions. Some of the topics include – Custodian of Rights: NHRC; Growth of Human Rights: An Overview Conceptual Framework of Human Rights and Social Justice; From Natural Rights to Human Rights; Dalit Assertion and Social Inclusion; New Social Movements and Human Rights; Discourse on Rights in India; Debates and Dilemmas; Theories of Rights, Developments and Criticisms and so on. The course will continue till 19th September 2020.
