NEET UG Counselling 2026: State-Wise MBBS Seat Matrix & How to Read It

0 min read

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026–27 academic session, confirming 1,36,939 MBBS seats across India—an increase of 9,911 seats from last year. Understanding the state-wise distribution, government vs private seat split, and the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) versus 85% State Quota is essential for making informed counselling decisions.

MBBS Seat Matrix 2026 at a Glance

Note: This seat matrix does not include AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER, or other Institutes of National Importance (INIs), which have separate admission processes.

Quick Facts

• India has 1,36,939 MBBS seats for the 2026–27 academic session.
• 63,296 are government seats, while 73,643 are private seats.
• Karnataka has the highest number of MBBS seats in India.
• Counselling is conducted separately through the 15% AIQ and 85% State Quota.
• Qualifying NEET makes you eligible for counselling—it does not automatically register you.

Why the MBBS Seat Matrix Matters

If you're preparing for NEET UG counselling, the total number of seats is only part of the story.

Your chances of getting an MBBS seat depend on:

• The state where seats are available.
• The number of government versus private seats.
• Your NEET rank.
• Whether you're eligible under the All India Quota (AIQ) or State Quota.
• Previous years' closing ranks.

Understanding these factors helps you build a smarter counselling strategy instead of relying only on the national seat count.

How Many MBBS Seats Are Available in 2026?

According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), India has 1,36,939 MBBS seats for the 2026–27 admission cycle.

The official breakdown is:

• Total MBBS seats: 1,36,939
• Government seats: 63,296
• Private seats: 73,643
• Increase over 2025: 9,911 seats

While this increase expands overall capacity, admission opportunities still vary significantly across different states and counselling quotas.

State-Wise MBBS Seat Matrix 2026 (Top States)

These four states account for a significant share of India's total MBBS seats.

If your state isn't listed here, don't assume your opportunities are limited. Many candidates secure admission through the All India Quota, while competition under the State Quota varies depending on domicile rules and the number of applicants.

Before finalizing your choice list, always verify the complete state-wise seat matrix through the official MCC notification.

Government vs Private MBBS Seats

Looking only at the total number of seats can be misleading.

The split between government and private colleges plays a major role in your counselling strategy.

Government MBBS Seats (63,296)

• Lower tuition fees.
• Higher competition.
• Strong demand during AIQ and State Quota counselling.

Private MBBS Seats (73,643)

• Greater overall availability.
• Fees differ significantly across states and institutions.
• Financial planning becomes an important consideration.

Rather than asking, "How many seats are available?", ask, "How many government seats are available in the states where I'm eligible?"

AIQ vs State Quota: Understanding the Seat Allocation Process

NEET UG counselling is conducted through two separate admission channels.

The 15% AIQ is open to eligible candidates from across India.

The remaining 85% State Quota is primarily reserved for candidates who meet the domicile or eligibility requirements of individual states.

As a result, two candidates with similar NEET scores may have very different admission opportunities depending on their state eligibility.

Expected NEET UG Counselling 2026 Timeline

Important: As of publication, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has not released the official counselling schedule. The timeline below is based on current expectations and should be treated as tentative.

Each counselling round generally follows this sequence:

1. Seat matrix release
2. Registration and fee payment
3. Choice filling and locking
4. Seat allotment result
5. Reporting to the allotted college

Important: Qualifying NEET UG only makes you eligible for counselling. You must register separately on the MCC portal for the All India Quota (AIQ) and on your respective state's counselling portal for State Quota admissions. Your NEET application does not automatically register you for counselling.

Bookmark both the MCC website and your state's counselling portal, as official schedules and notifications are released independently.

How to Use the MBBS Seat Matrix Effectively

The seat matrix isn't just a list of colleges and seats—it should guide your entire counselling strategy.

Here's how to make the most of it:

1. Shortlist Your Eligible States

Start with your home state for State Quota eligibility, then identify states where you'd be willing to accept an AIQ seat.

2. Prioritize Government Colleges

Government colleges generally offer lower tuition fees and are preferred by most candidates. Check the number of government seats available in your target states before considering private options.

3. Compare Previous Years' Closing Ranks

The seat matrix changes every year, but previous years' closing ranks provide a useful benchmark for estimating your admission chances.

4. Keep Private Colleges as a Backup

Private colleges can significantly expand your options, but fee structures vary widely. Prepare a shortlist in advance instead of researching during the counselling process.

5. Don't Ignore Smaller States

States with fewer MBBS seats may also have fewer applicants, which can sometimes improve admission opportunities compared to highly competitive states.

Common Counselling Mistakes to Avoid

Many candidates lose out on seats because of avoidable errors during counselling.

Here are some of the most common mistakes:

• Assuming qualifying NEET automatically registers you for counselling.
• Filling too few college choices.
• Ignoring State Quota eligibility rules.
• Focusing only on total seats instead of government seat availability.
• Not checking previous years' closing ranks.
• Waiting until the last day to complete registration or choice filling.

Planning ahead can significantly improve your chances during seat allotment.

Understanding the distribution of government and private seats, evaluating opportunities under the AIQ and State Quota, and using previous years' closing ranks can help you make informed counselling decisions.
