Ideate, Innovate and Implement - Over The Wall 2017 by Marico

Why do we need to break the wall when we can leap over the wall? Yes, we can and this opportunity is being given to all the students by Marico.

Marico Limited is an Indian consumer goods company providing consumer products and services in the areas of Health and Beauty based in Mumbai. It was established on 2 April 1990 and has generated a revenue of US$ 850 million according to the recently available data.

Over The Wall by Marico is a competition which attempts to identify such Leapers- who can take up the challenge and come up with unique and innovative ideas to leap over the walls (Business obstacles). It has been created around these three principles- Ideate, Innovate and Implement.

Over the Wall 2017 was open to both first and final year students from IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIFT, NITIE, SIBM, IIT Bombay, XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR, NMIMS and MDI Gurgaon. Students were to form 3-member teams either from 1st yr or 2nd year.

Over the Wall 2017 was conducted in 2 phases-

Phase I: Campus Rounds


All the participating campuses were divided into 3-Function Pools: Sales, Marketing, and Operations. Teams were assigned case studies (Live Business Challenges faced by Marico) pertaining to the Function Pool that they were in. The teams are given Live Business Challenge so that by doing research for finding an appropriate solution, they would also get to know more about Marico. Upon evaluation by the team of professionals from Marico top 3 teams per campus were shortlisted.

In the next leg of the competition, the top 3 from each campus competed against each other in order to claim the position of a Campus Winner. In this round, the teams present their ideas to the various CxOs from Marico. The session with CxOs is an interactive one where both teams and the CxOs share their own ideas and feedback on the case.

The campus rounds culminate by choosing a total of 3 teams (one team per Function Pool) to participate in phase II of Over the Wall 2017.

Team Wallflowers from IIM Lucknow was declared as the winner of the Marketing Pool, Team Underdogs from MDI Gurgaon was declared as the winner of the Sales Pool and Team Live-On from SPJIMR was declared as the winner of the Operations Pool.

The case studies were designed to compel the participants to break paradigms, think out the box and look for ways to leap Over The Wall!

Phase II: Innovation Immersion


Top 3 Finalists were given the opportunity to work with the Marico Innovation Foundation, it is an organization which is mentored by Mr. Harsh Mariwala. Each team got to work with an organization on a project to help the organization in accelerating its growth. The organizations were a part of Social Innovation Acceleration Program by  Marico Innovation Foundation.

The teams worked on social enterprise models and the Marico Innovation Foundation helped them to leverage innovation to scale the impact of their work. Students were assigned guides and mentors on the project to ensure understanding and learning is maximized.

The projects were designed in such a way that the students got a chance to create something meaningful, something beyond a presentation and were able to chalk out implementation according to their understanding.

Team Live On comprising of Gayatri Jaisinghani, PVK Srikant, Prachi Mahajan from SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) was declared as the winner of Marico Over the Wall 2017. The winners received a cash prize of INR 5,00,000 along with a Pre-placement interview from Marico. View the list of finalists here.
