There are multiple IIM alumni who have made it big in the market and landed a job most of us can only dream of. But what comes as a surprise is, not everyone who passes out from the sought after IIM colleges actually take up jobs in managerial positions, which is the most widely accepted notion. Although the majority of them end up continuing in management fields to later become the leaders, CEOs, CMOs. CFOs, or founders of some big companies, some of them decide to follow the paths less travelled, giving up upon the lucrative offers.

Multiple IIM Bangalore alumni occupy senior managerial and academic positions across the globe, but here we will be talking about the famous IIM Bangalore alumni who chose fields that had nothing to do with management and took the road less travelled.

Koppillil Radhakrishnan (Scientist)

Many of us would be oblivious to the fact that the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr K Radhakrishnan is an alumnus of IIM Bangalore. Yes, you read that right. Dr Radhakrishnan did his post-graduate studies in management from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in 1974-76.

He played a crucial role in the Chandrayaan-1 moon mission, India's maiden moon mission project and was earlier the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) Thiruvananthapuram.

Dr Radhakrishnan has held prestigious positions such as the director of National Remote Sensing Agency, director of the Regional Remote Sensing Service Centres of the National Natural Resources Management System, director of Budget and Economic Analysis wing of ISRO, national director of Integrated Mission for Sustainable Development and director of Indian National Centre for Ocean Service.

Nila Madhab Panda (Indian Film Producer)

Many of you must be familiar or at least heard of the movie, ‘I am Kalam’, but what you probably were oblivious to, was that the director of this movie is an IIM Bangalore pass out. Conspicuously, the field he decided to get into has nothing to do with the entrepreneurship classes he took while in IIM. He chose to travel the road less taken to follow his passion even if it meant saying no to a secure future and a lucrative job.

An Indian film producer and director, Panda has produced and directed over seventy films, documentaries and shorts based on social issues such as child labour, climate change, water issues, sanitation, education and several other developmental issues in India. His films have won numerous awards and are said to be entertaining yet socially awakening.

Anjana Sinha (IPS)

A pass out from IIM Bangalore, Anjana Sinha, decided to serve the nation and become an IPS officer. We all know that, though respectable, government jobs do not increase your bank balance exponentially, graduating from IIM B would mean getting placed with an unmatched package. But Anjana took a courageous step and decided to keep the nation above the monetary benefits.

She is an Indian Police Service 1990-batch officer from Andhra Pradesh-cadre and is currently on Government of India deputation to Central Industrial Security Force at the rank of Inspector General and serves as the director of National Industrial Security Academy, Hyderabad. Hats off to her decision to take a road not many would dare to!

Amrapali Kata (IAS)

Another great example of someone who took the decision to give up on a fancy, luxurious life has to be Mrs. Amrapali Kata. Popularly known as a young and energetic IAS Officer, Amrapali is the first lady IAS Officer to be appointed to the newly formed Warangal Urban district in Telangana.

After her graduation from IIT Madras, she pursued an MBA from IIM Bangalore (2004-2006). She is also one of the youngest to have cleared the UPSC exam securing all India 39th rank and opted for the IAS (2009 batch).

Vega Tamotia (Indian Actress and Model)

Vega Tamotia a pass out from IIM Bangalore chose a field that is not even closely related to what she studied in her MBA. Breaking all shackles and notions of an IIM graduate, Vega Tamotia decided to pursue her passion for acting and is now an Indian film actress and model. She has appeared in numerous Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films. She is renowned for her performances as Saroja in the film of the same name, and Sobikannu in Pasanga

Vega, has since childhood been intrigued by the field of drama and acting. Before acting in the movies, she had earlier been acting for Broadway Drama Troupe to gain experience in theatre arts.

Ghanshyam Tiwari (Indian Politician)

Instead of sticking to the field he had initially chosen, Ghanshyam Tiwari who did a program in Executive Management from the prestigious IIM Bangalore, later took an unpredictable call to be a part of Indian Political system.

Joining the Indian Politics at a pretty young age, Tiwari is presently the current National Spokesperson of the Samajwadi Party. From 2010 to 2015, the IIM-B pass out served as the advisor to the JD (U) government in Bihar. He also contested the Lok Sabha constituency of Karakat in the general election in the year 2019.

It is a known fact that IIM campuses provide an ideal environment conducive to gaining knowledge and for holistic development. Not only does the campus provide an excellent atmosphere for academic endeavours, it also enables you to ease up and grow on the personal front. And probably that’s what these notable IIM Bangalore alumni has made us believe in.
