How Team Revengers From IIM Kashipur Triumphed At Reliance TUP 9.0!

Reliance TUP is one of India's most prestigious B-School competitions. And when we got an opportunity to participate in this competition, there were no two ways to participate in it. So, we enthusiastically joined the competition and wanted to give it our best shot. But winning Reliance TUP 9.0 came as an unexpected delight.

I am Tunir Sahoo from Team Revengers at IIM Kashipur, and I am excited to take you on our journey of winning Reliance TUP 9.0. My team consisted of three other members: Arnab Mondal, Kanishka Kumar, and Debolina Basu. But before we delve any further, let me give you a quick overview of the competition structure.

Reliance TUP 9.0: Structure

T.U.P 9.0 had the following rounds:

Idea Submission

Registered teams had to upload their 3-minute pitch video.

Elimination Round

The shortlisted teams from the previous round had to virtually showcase a 3-minute video to a live jury. A 3-minute presentation and a 4-minute Q&A round followed this.

Regional Semi-Finale

One step away from the Grand Finale, this stage consisted of presentation and Q&A rounds. An exciting element of this stage was the Idea Face-Off, where the participating teams got the chance to act as jurors for one another and question other teams about their solutions.

Grand Finale

The two-day event everyone was waiting for! The selected teams got to visit Reliance’s world-class campus and interact with most of the senior leaders in the organization. On day 1, the teams showcased their ideas in individual booths at the Idea Fair, and on day 2, the National Finalists got one final chance to make The Ultimate Pitch (T.U.P) to the Grand Jury.

TUP 9.0 was open for both first and second-year full-time MBA/PGDM students from all B-Schools in India. Every member of the team had to be from the same business school. So I, along with Arnab, Kanishka, and Debolina, formed our team - The Revengers. There is a story behind this name that I will share with you later in the article. For now, let me take you to how we reached the Grand Finale of TUP 9.0 and became the National Winners.

Our Strategy

For a competition like Reliance TUP, half of the battle is won by framing a good strategy. We based our strategy on a combination of innovation, thorough research, and effective communication. We identified a pressing issue in healthcare, specifically the early detection of breast cancer, and proposed an AI-based solution. The critical elements of our strategy included:

In-Depth Research

We conducted extensive research to understand the current challenges in breast cancer detection, available technologies, and the potential impact of AI in addressing these issues. We surveyed and collaborated with many nearby hospitals in the Uttarakhand region to obtain the breast cancer dataset. Using this data, we focused on creating a solution that was not only technologically advanced but also feasible and scalable.

Team Collaboration

As the team lead, I ensured effective collaboration among team members, leveraging each member's strengths and expertise to contribute to the project. I was from Pharmaceutical Technology, while my teammates Kanishk, Arnab, and Debolina belonged to finance, design, and IT backgrounds, respectively.

Our team's forte lay in its strategic composition, harnessing the complementary skills of each member. My background in Pharmaceutical Technology and expertise in Oncology research provided the project's scientific foundation. Kanishka Kumar's financial acumen ensured a robust business model. Arnab Mondal's design skills enhanced the project's visual appeal, and Debolina Basu's overall presentation proficiency effectively communicated our ideas. This collaborative synergy allowed us to address the project comprehensively, presenting a well-rounded and impactful solution.

Also, as a team, we prioritized active listening, constructive feedback, and compromise to ensure a harmonious working environment. This approach strengthened our project and fostered a positive team dynamic, contributing to our success in the competition.

Compelling Pitch

We dedicated enough time to craft a compelling and persuasive pitch, emphasizing the significance of our solution, its potential impact, and the market demand for such innovations. In the last four months before the competition, we gave almost 48 hours per week to prepare our pitch.

Stepping into the Competitive Fray

Equipped with a well-researched and structured pitch and thorough practice, we were confident about performing our best at TUP 9.0.

The level of competition was outstanding. Thousands of brilliant ideas and meticulous pitches left us amazed. We particularly considered teams from IIM Lucknow and SIBM Pune as tough competitors since these teams also pitched ideas in the healthcare sector. The judges were experts in relevant fields and provided constructive feedback to the participants. Everyone had path-breaking ideas to present. However, out of 19000+ registrations, only 9 teams made it to the Grand Finale. We were lucky to be one of them and finally emerge as Reliance TUP 9.0 National Winners. We will never forget the moment.

After winning the TUP 9.0 National Finals, I was granted an opportunity to give a victory speech. I explained to the crowd why I named my team Revengers. It was because I was eliminated in TUP 8.0 in the first round itself. The audience erupted into laughter, and as a team, we savored the sweet taste of success.
