School, Graduation, MBA or any post Graduation for that matter, every single of these is a step closer to the D-Day when you find yourself face to face who will eventually sign your pay cheque. The one who will help you grow as a person and a professional. But to get to the process of growth and progress you have to pass the biggest hurdle for every working man- the selection process aka the Interview! An interview is nothing but a test on self branding where you are the brand and your interview is your pitch! The recruiter or the consumer has to eventually make the purchase on the basis of your pitch.
Alekhya Chakraborty, Brand Manager- Vivel, ITC | Unilever | Emami | MakeMyTrip; talk about what makes you a desirable candidate in the eyes of the recruiter. He says the key lies in 2 parts. The first all-encompassing CV. And a close second is the personal interaction which can be in the form of a Group Discussion or Personal Interview or both.
He starts by explaining how one can work upon their CV to make it recruiter-friendly. He says that the aspirant should not simply list down their achievements and accomplishments. They should be specific and quantify it. Think of it as a self branding exercise. For instance, if you managed to get a sponsorship for your College fest, write that you got X number of sponsors on board for Y sum of amount for the year. If you were a Sales Associate with an e-Commerce delivery company, don’t just write that I worked with this company in this capacity from this period to that. Write the kind of work you did. For example, I grew the business from X to Y during a period of say a year and the growth was Z%. This one line makes your candidature a lot more actionable, objective and makes you stand out from the crowd of CVs out there.
He then goes on to talk about the personal interaction aspect. Alekhya says that the recruiter looks for characteristics of Student Managers with a unique point of view. And always ensure that you can explain the process of how the viewpoint came to be. Alekhya says that in Sales and Marketing roles it is very important to have a unique point of view which is your own to stand out from the crowd. This makes your brand proposition really stand out from the crowd in the category that you play in. If you are in sales fraternity so how to barge your way with your unique point of view to really sell your proposition out there.
He goes on to say that you should never shy away from sharing your unique point of view with full confidence.
Alekhya then goes on to share the magic elixir to be used for interviews. He says that as a Student Manager you should have the ability to lead your interview in the direction that you want to, in the context of the job role that you have applied for.
He explains with the help of an example. He says, if a Brand Manager or Senior Brand Manager is going to interview you and you have done something no matter how small but in the context of brand marketing, do put it up front and make it really visible and apparent for him/her to pick it up and kind of have a conversation with you. Once you do this you have managed to make the conversation relevant to the context that's on the table and made your candidature much better.
Alekhya concludes with, saying the ability to listen and not just react is very important. He says that we all have our biases in life and even more as Student Managers and Professional Managers. He says listen to the point of view first. What is being sought in the light of conversation that you are having with the other person on the other side of the table and then react. What are all the qualities of the conversation becomes a lot more engaging and you connect more strongly with the other person.
The conscious act of self branding is something that will take all Student Managers the distance they aspire to go.
