Shaping problems to fit their knowledge gets Team ClubWin from IIM Indore, a spot in the HUL FinAce Season 3 finale
Moulding the problem according to their knowledge
In the national finals, the top 13 teams from different campuses participated. As each team’s presentation was behind closed doors, comparison with other teams was not possible. An interesting challenge was lack of complete data as is the case in the real world. We overcame it by making relevant assumptions and creating scenarios.
The case needed integrated approach taking into account not just finance but also sourcing, marketing and other functions. The judgement was done taking into account overall impact. The competition really gave a flavour of what a finance manager at HUL does in his day to day job.
A learning experience
The event was organised extremely well by the employer branding team and us participants were really pampered by the organisation. Old school values of consistent effort, structured thinking, team effort and clear communication always bears fruit. Any team effort needs proper division of work and ability to manage conflicts.
Getting to talk with Mr Srinivas Phatak, HUL's CFO about their strategy was definitely an awesome moment. All three of us were definitely not people regarded as fin gods on campus. Hence, we tried to treat the case as a problem solving exercise. Working with talented colleagues is always a treat!!
Team's forte was clarity of thought and an analytically comprehensive solution. One of our team members did the marketing mix, another member was great with analysis and number crunching while the third person helped provide structure and flow to the team for HUL FinAce Season 3.
We divided the work based on people’s strengths and were not afraid to challenge and push each other's ideas at IIM Indore. We tried to ensure that criticism is of the idea and not the person giving the idea, this helped people in understanding other's objection and including that in our proposal.
