Taming the trends of IIM waitlist movement: Old IIMs and New IIMs

Are you looking back at November, realizing you probably should’ve revised more, or thinking what would your parents think about the result of the final shortlist? There is no denying the fact that currently, everything seems to be reminding you of the shortlist, isn't it? Well, the worst part of all this is just not knowing! And in order to calm your morbid anxiety, we have rounded up the latest trends observed in the IIM waitlist movement.

Take heart! While feelings of anxiety around this time are normal, none of it is worth it. You have already worked your fingers to the bone and now all you can do is wait patiently for the final shortlist. The degree of IIM waitlist movement generally depends on the overlapping pool of candidates shortlisted by various IIMs. The movement in IIMs for General and NC-OBC category usually does not show extreme deviations from the standard numbers whereas for other categories; this may vary significantly from year to year.

Waitlist movement of IIMs

1. IIM Ahmedabad

IIM Ahmedabad sees one of the lowest waitlist movements among the top MBA colleges. The waitlist movements here generally remain in a single digit. For the 2020-22 batch, the waitlist moved by about 30 in the general category, while it was about 25 in NC-OBC Category. The numbers were about 25 and 8 for SC and ST categories respectively.

2. IIM Bangalore

Just like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore sees one of the lowest waitlist movements among IIMs. The waitlist movement of IIM-B is generally greater than IIM-A because of people choosing IIM-A over IIM-B if they get offers from both. According to information available on Quora, the waitlist movement in the general category was about 60 for the batch of 2019-21.

3. IIM Calcutta

IIM Calcutta sees a little more waitlist movement as compared to IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore. This happens because of the overlap of offers from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore. Generally, a student who has offers from IIM-A + IIM-C or IIM-A + IIM-B prefers IIM-A.

4. IIM Kozhikode

IIM Kozhikode is counted in one of the top 6 IIMs of the country. The institute does see significant waitlist movements. If we go by the figures of batch 2020-22, the movement was around 186 for the General category. For the NC-OBC category, the waitlist moved by about 209. 

5. IIM Indore

IIM Indore is also regarded as one of the oldest IIMs of our country. Despite being a top MBA college, it sees a huge waitlist movement. If we go by the numbers of the 2019-21 batch, the waitlist movement was about 400 for the general category and 154 for the NC-OBC category. For SC and ST, the respective figures were around 124 and 72.

6. IIM Trichy

IIM Trichy ranks among one of the top b-schools in the country. It is one of the best among new generation IIMs. If we go by the figures of the 2020-22 batch, the waitlist moved by about 224 in the general category and 153 for NC-OBC. For SC and ST categories, the figures were around 100 and 49 respectively.

7. IIM Udaipur

IIM Udaipur has made a good reputation within a short span of time. It now ranks among one of the best new IIMs in the country. The institute sees significant waitlist movement during admissions. For the 2020-22 batch, the waitlist movement was about 560 for the general category and 274 for NC-OBC. The numbers were 170 and 30 for SC and ST categories respectively.

The waitlist movements for the above IIMs can give you a good indication of the waitlist movements of other IIMs.
