The Coffee Culture Of B-School, An MBA Student's Lifeline -By Palash Surana From IIM Indore-Mumbai Campus

In my MBA student journey, there has been a dramatic shift from the 'Photocopy' machine to the 'Coffee' vending machine when the actual B-School stress life started. The Love affair of 'Coffee and Case Studies' is very natural in the B-school culture. This is where you have to pull an all-nighter to read and understand the case studies.

In my college, at night, the “Coffee Vending” machine acts as an energy-emitting source. The students revolve around the coffee machine as electrons revolve around the nucleus. It’s a place where boys get a chance to interact with girls and vice versa. A place where senior-junior chit-chats happen. Boys standing in a queue on behalf of their girlfriends or their friends and vice-versa is a very common scene.

Furthermore, Coffee Dates are a very important part of B-school culture. Luckily, we have many CCD shops near our campus. During the cup of coffee discussion, we get a chance to impress our crush. A chance to seek guidance about our career from our professors and seniors and of course with our friends we try to dig up all hidden truths and college gossip. There are many kinds of coffee lovers in our college. While some like cold coffee, others like hot coffee, strong coffee, and fitness enthusiast like black coffee.

The Lifeline of Each MBA Student

Sometimes coffee can lead to the mingling of cultures and hearts. My south Indian friends taught us how to feel the aroma of the coffee, which kind of coffee grains are considered best, and how coffee turns into the final product we see. How coffee is cultivated and grown in different parts of south India and how the coffee market is growing rapidly down there in the south and in all parts of the country. So, it’s a pleasant experience to know about the technicalities of coffee culture from its origin. It helps us in making friends quickly.

'Coffee Bites'- A New Trend!

Drinking coffee inside the classroom during lectures is allowed in our college. For some students, it acts as a lifeline. There are some students in my class who always enter in class with notebooks in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. These are called the “Coffee Bites” of the class. According to them, coffee helps them in increasing their concentration in order to give more relevant class participation points. So, this shows the relationship between coffee and the human body and its psychological positive effect on the human brain.

Moreover, the coffee culture at my B-School has emerged as a major point of discussion. There always are ongoing debates between the coffee-lover groups and tea-lover groups of our campus about which of them is more effective. Thus, in an indirect way coffee culture leads to the exchange of ideas and experiences, and beliefs.
