How to get over rejection and rise against all odds? By Sahil from VIT

Trapped in a well, the hero is confused and doesn't know what to do. He has lost all hopes and no one is there to offer help. Somehow he manages to get around all the security guards and now he has to find a way out of this well. He has tried several times to climb the well but in vain. Does this sound like dismal rejection? Well, you are right but remember that you can always get over rejection!

There are many times in life when we face problems and feel we are doomed. We become lazier, lose enthusiasm and the curiosity of learning new things. Everything starts falling apart. Remember the time of your college placement when you realised that you have to study the syllabus for the entire engineering period because you wasted your last 3 years watching series and playing games. And now every company you are applying for is rejecting you no matter how many hours you have spent in front of your laptop screen or how many skills you copied in your resume. The hero tries to get out of the well but his own prior actions let him down every time.

You will get knocked down again and again

Let's say you end up in a multinational company. You put extra hours of work hoping to gain recognition in it. You spend sleepless nights with countless mugs of coffee saying, 'talk to you later' to your family and friends just to get that extra minute to work on that project. But no matter what you do, you end up nowhere with crushed self-confidence, sadness, and your bladder filled with coffee. The hero had once again tried to escape but he had failed yet again.

At one moment in life, you will feel so positive and certain about the things you are doing. You will feel like your period of struggle is paying off and you are achieving what others are afraid of. Everything is stable, predictable, cool and calm. Everything is under control and smooth. You are where you always wanted to be. Everything is in order. But suddenly, there is rustling in the bushes. You failed in an exam, you got rejected from that job interview or that business deal. That one dismissal, that one denial in your life and now everything's changed.

At one moment the sky was your limit and the next moment you hit rock bottom. There is chaos lurking inside the order. At this point, you don't know where you are, and you are doing things when you don't know what to do. You are in a situation that neither you know nor you understand. But the good thing about rock bottom is that the only way you can go is up.

Handling rejection

When life hits you with these problems, based on my personal experience, there are a few things we all need to understand which will help us in dealing with rejections and failures.

    • You are vulnerable and you need support from others. Keep your supportive friends close and family closer. Ask them to keep an eye on your activities and your behavior.
    • Situations where you face rejections, push your mind into overdrive where if you leave it idle, it will overthink and I guess you already know its consequences. So, fill your task-list with exercise (most important), do things that you like (playing outdoor, spending time with friends, bike rides or whatnot). Just don't forget to have FUN.
    • Accept the situation and fight it head-on. There is no other way. (harsh but true)
    • Music plays an important role in determining how is your day gonna be. So choose it wisely.
    • Back to back rejection will break you down. The only thing you need to cope up with this is PATIENCE, really! Remember slow and steady wins the race, that's true.
    • There is literally no harm in attending any counselor or any therapy sessions during your low time because they will pull that tiny source of light when everything is dark.
    • Gratitude is MUST. Be thankful for everything you have every day because there are people who don't even have a single opportunity to work for. At least you are getting something.
    • My personal favorite and the best, there is nothing called failure. You either win or you learn. You are either a winner or a warrior.
    • It's ok to slow down but DO NOT STOP AT ALL. At this point where you don't have motivation in your life, you need discipline because no matter how many failures you have stacked up, you have to keep doing what needs to be done!
    • Do not QUIT. You're already in pain. You're already HURT. Get a REWARD from it by learning the lessons indeed.

Get Up Again

The key take back is, regardless of your failures, your pain, your sufferings, your broken dreams, you have to keep patience and never stop believing in yourself. When hard times hit you, take a deep breath and remember who you are and why you started! Stop asking for sympathy and feeling pity about yourself because you know what, at the end of the day, nobody cares. So get up, rely only on yourself to get things done because no one else is gonna do it for you. This is life, you play or you die that's how this game works. Simple rules. Take 100% responsibility for everything you do. You come up with excuses, you blame others, you want others to fix your life. No one will do it for you unless you take control in your hands.

Go out, ask for help, believe in yourself, just like our hero, Batman. When he asked the wise man how to cross the well, he replied, "You do not fear death. You think this makes you strong. No, It makes you weak. Make the climb as the child did. Without the rope. Then fear will find you again." Because once, there was a kid in the exact same situation. He was scared of his failure, scared of not being able to achieve anything, feared death, which taught him a lesson and gave him the confidence to climb out and live freely. And that's all we need to triumph in any situation and rise above all!
