What an Employer expects from an MBA graduate
That was a small anecdote but it is true that not all who are from premier b-schools reign high horses from the first day, well some of they do but what might be the reason behind the failure and rejection of the few we will try to discover through this article. Sometime ago Financial Times had surveyed over 48 employers and results came in as a verdict of what the employers seek but are unable to find in the graduates. The businesses were spread across 12 sectors, among them e-commerce, industry, and finance.
While most of you might be wondering what your in-depth knowledge in your particular domain along with the lucidity in the way you express has earned the brownie points? To your dismay, none of the skills as stated in the survey deals with any other core MBA subjects, such as finance and marketing. Here are the five most important skills that you should possess-
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people
- Time management and the ability to prioritize
- Understanding digital impact on businesses
- Ability to build, sustain, and expand the network of people
- Ability to solve complex problems
According to the report, the ability to work with a wide variety of people (cited by 76 percent of employers) and the ability to prioritize (cited by 72 percent) and the ability to manage their time effectively was the most difficult to find.
The employers also pointed out that the skills as described below was really difficult to find and they are very keen on hiring someone who possesses these skills owing to the change in the business ecosystem.
- Ability to use social media to benefit business
- Ability to train or coach others
- Financial forecasting
- Big Data analysis
- Brand storytelling skills
Social media is replacing the conventional media at a blinding speed, Artifical intelligence (AI) has entered the business space, changes are happening very fast, during all these times, innovation is the key to success. And an employer will prefer to hire some who is multitasking or probably as a wider knowledge of current marketing tools.
Students should now shift their focus from these areas as stated below and sharpen on their skills around the aforementioned areas.
- Specialised marketing skills
- Complex statistical skills
- Environmental management and CSR
