Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is a first-generation entrepreneur and global business leader with over 4 decades of experience in biotechnology. Fueled by her passion, she started her biotech journey in 1978 from her garage in India. Today, that journey is changing lives for the better across the globe. She is regarded as an unconventional thinker with many firsts to her credit. Under her aegis, Biocon delivers on the promise of making medicines accessible and affordable to millions of patients worldwide.
Named among TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, she led Biocon to make medicines accessible and affordable to millions of patients worldwide. She is the recipient of two of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Shri (1989) & the Padma Bhushan (2005). Currently, she is a member of MIT Corporation and Board of Governors of IIT Bombay.

- In the year 1995, IIT Bombay instituted its management school with the objective of transforming professionals with technological background to "Renaissance Leaders" of tomorrow.
- The school was renamed as Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) in the year 2000, in honor of Dr. Shailesh J. Mehta, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Bombay and a generous contributor to the school.
