On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the Ministry of Education announced changes to the education system and introduced the new curriculum framework for the 2024 academic session. One of the biggest changes announced was that the board examination will be conducted bi-annually, i.e. twice a year.

Here’s the complete list of changes announced for the 12th Board Exams:
- Frequency of Examination: Board Examination will be conducted twice a year. Students can retain the best score.
- Compulsory language: It’s compulsory for students of Class 11 and 12 to study two languages - one of these has to be an Indian language.
- Subject Choices: The subject choice is no longer restricted for Class 11 and 12 students. They can now choose subjects outside of their streams.
- Purpose of Examination: Board examinations will emphasize the evaluation of subjects’ comprehension, and target a reduction of extensive coaching and memorization.
- Certification for exam creators and assessors: Individuals have to complete university-certified courses before creating and assessing board exams.
What More Is New In The Policy?
Apart from the aforementioned changes, the ministry also announced that school boards will develop capabilities for conducting ‘on-demand’ examinations in the future.
"School boards are to develop capacities to offer 'on demand' exams in due course of time. Board exam test developers and evaluators will have to go through university-certified courses before taking up this work.” - The Ministry of Education
The Ministry also shared that the new syllabus will be prepared “according to the requirements of the 21st century and based on original Indian thinking.”

The tentative date for the CBSE 12th Board exams is February 15 to April 10, 2024. A detailed timetable with the exam dates is expected to release in December 2023 on the CBSE website - cbse.gov.in.
