With 90 colleges, 87 departments, 13 centres/institutes, and 20 hostels, DU admissions are no less than a Herculean task. By any chance, if the aspiring candidates get hold of the wrong end of the stick, it leaves them vexed and baffled. If you fear of falling in the same category and can’t make head or tail of DU admissions, stick to our series of articles that will endow you with the much-required comprehensive knowledge. In this write-up, we will primarily focus on the courses on the basis of different streams and the quota offered by the varsity.

Before starting with the streamwise courses that one can apply for pursuing graduation from Delhi University, let's have a sneak peek into some important guidelines.

    • The registration for UG courses will close on July 4, 2020.
    • In the case of B.A Hons. Philosophy, no deductions are made in the final percentage, since it is not taught as a subject in SSC.
    • If anyone is considering going for B.A. Programme, make sure to have both the courses mentioned in the programme in the 12th standard.
    • Regarding Certificate and Diploma courses, they are merit-based and anyone irrespective of subjects in 12th can opt for it.
    • This year there will be a single form for all the colleges. Just one form of DU registration will be considered for all courses and colleges, based on their merit, unlike previous years where one can opt for graduation only among those courses which are filled in the form.
    • Following the online verification trend of the last year, this year also the students are supposed to share online links of their mark sheets. However, during the final stage of DU admissions 2020, there will be a physical document verification as well.
    • Open house will be replaced by webinars which will most likely start from the next week.

NOTE: DU has recently announced that this year there will be no deductions in the overall percentage of students who change their stream to apply for the B.A. course. Earlier, for pursuing B.A. in any of the Languages/History/Music or any subject on the same lines, there was 2.5% - 5% deducted from the overall 12th percentage, in case one did not have that particular subject in their 12th standard.

Quota in Delhi University

In order to ensure that talent from marginalised communities also gets a fair shot at opportunities, DU makes allowances for specific quotas. As per the official data of the varsity, among 367895 total registrations and 258388 paid applications, the ST and EWS categories had about 3% applicants, the UR category had 59%, followed by OBC and SC with 21% and 14% respectively.

To help you leverage its resources, here is everything you need to know about the quota applied during DU Admissions:

SC/ST

    • Of all the sanctioned seats, 22.5% seats have been reserved for SC and ST. The SC category holds a share of 15% and ST has a quota of 7.5%.
    • Requirement: Any student falling under this category has to fill the common admission forms and carry the relevant certificates

OBC

    • A huge chunk of quota goes to the OBC category, with 27% reserved seats.
    • Requirement: The fundamental step to avail this quota is to fill the common admission form and get an OBC certificate in the name. DO NOT forget to mention the non-creamy layer.

Sports and ECA

    • They together make a 5% share in the quota at DU.
    • As per the official data, Football, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, and Volleyball have been ranked as the top 5 sports whereas Kho-kho has received the lowest number of applications.
    • About ECA, the top 5 activities with highest applications cater to NCC, Debate, Quiz, Fine arts, and Theatre whereas creative writing and dance saw the lowest number of applications, according to DU Admissions in the former year.
    • Requirement: To get Sports or ECA quota one must hold a National and district-level certificate. All the applicants have to appear for trials. However, the candidates who have represented in International events will get direct admission. This year owing to the lockdown and keeping in mind the safety of applicants the sports trials have been called off. Instead certificates will be taken into consideration.

Persons with Disabilities (PWD)

    • Of the total intake, 3% is reserved for differently-abled candidates. This is further segregated into 1% for students with low vision or blindness, another 1% for hearing impaired, and the rest for locomotor disability or cerebral palsy.
    • Reservation for each of these 3 categories is interchangeable in case of non-availability of candidates in individual sub-categories.
    • Requirement: The applicant should bear a disability certificate and should NOT have less than 40% disability to get a relaxation of a maximum of 5% in the minimum eligibility in the qualifying/admission entrance examination.

Children/Widows of the eligible Armed Forces Personnel (CW)

    • Requirement: The Widows/Wards of Defence personnel killed in action will be given the highest priority, followed by Wards of serving personnel and ex-servicemen disabled in action. Another category of the reservation is for widows/wards of defence personnel who died in peacetime with death attributable to military service followed by defence personnel with disability. The last preference is to the wards of Ex-servicemen personnel and serving personnel including personnel of police forces who are in receipt of Gallantry Awards.
