Green buildings are known for their resource-efficient life cycles and sustainability, making them an excellent option for busy and overpopulated towns. To promote the adoption of green buildings, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has partnered with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to train nearly one lakh architectural and engineering students in the principles of green engineering.

In fact, in order to take this initiative forward, IGBC has already partnered with 325 colleges and has opened student chapters there.

Green buildings hold a high priority in different government initiatives like Smart Cities Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). The aim of the program is to develop the largest pool of trained professionals in green concepts by 2025.

“AICTE plans to take the green education programme to all its affiliated institutions across India,” said Anil D Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE

M P Poonia, Vice-Chairman of AICTE emphasized that this pact will be crucial in exposing students to concepts that will make them formulate ideas that optimally utilize natural resources and protect the environment.

Gurmit Singh Arora, Chairman of IGBC, said, “the Green Building Movement in India has created an enormous demand for trained professionals to design, construct, operate and maintain green buildings.”

At present, over 7,558 projects, equating to nearly 8.18 billion square feet have adopted various IGBC Green and Net Zero Building Ratings.
