According to M. Jagdish Kumar, the chairman of UGC, a Common University Entrance Test (CUET) will replace class 12 marks as the criteria for UG admissions in all 45 central universities. For PG admissions, however, universities will have the option to choose between CUET or conducting their own entrance tests.

Along with doing away with high cut-offs, it will also ensure that candidates from the North East and rural India get equal opportunity in central university admissions, M. Jagdish Kumar said.

Q1. What Will Be The Mode Of Exam For CUET 2022?

The CUET exam for UG admission will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the CBT format. For the skill-based courses there will be exams on practical elements as well which will be conducted by the university, and the final score will be based on the marks obtained in both

Q2. What Will Be Eligibility Criteria For CUET 2022 exam?

According to the UGC chairman, anyone who has passed the class 12 exam will be eligible to appear for the exam. There is no minimum qualification standard but universities may use the class 12 marks alongside the CUET scores to select candidates for admission.

Q3. What Will Be The Question Pattern & Syllabus For CUET?

The CUET exam will have only Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and the duration of the exam will be 3.5 hours or 210 minutes, divided into two phases. The CUET exam topics will be based on the CBSE class 12 syllabus, and candidates will be required to follow NCERT textbooks. In Section 1, there will be 13 language subjects and in Section 2, there will be 27 domain-specific subjects, with the option to choose up to six.

Q4. When Will The CUET 2022 Exam Be Conducted?

Jagdish Kumar said that the CUET exam will most likely take place in the first week of July when all boards are done with the class 12 examinations. The application process will start online in the first week of April

Q5. What Will Be Language Options For The CUET exam?

Keeping in mind the diversity of India, the CUET exam will be conducted in 13 languages. Along with Hindi and English, candidates can also opt for Gujarati, Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

Q6. How Will CUET affect PG admissions in central universities?

According to reports, the central universities will have the flexibility to conduct PG admissions on the basis of CUET 2022 scores. The UGC chairman has said that while some universities are open to the idea, others still prefer to conduct admissions based on their own entrance exams.

Q7. How Will Admission Into Skill-based Courses Be Affected By CUET?

For skills-based courses, such as Music and Theatre, the final CUET score will be calculated on the basis of two criterias. On one hand, there will be the entrance test and on the other, universities will conduct skill-testing tests. The scores in the two tests will be combined to create the composite scores for the CUET examination

Q8. How Will CUET Affect Reservations In Central Universities?

Jagdish Kumar specifically noted that the CUET exam will not dilute the reservations. Along with the standard reservations, universities that have their own local reservation criteria will be allowed to admit students on the basis of that. However, students in the reserved category will also have to appear and qualify for the CUET to be eligible for admission.

Q9. Will There Be Any Impact On Ph.D. Admissions?

No, the CUET exam only concerns undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. For Ph.D. admissions, universities can either select candidates based on the UGC NET examination or conduct their own entrance test. It has been left at the discretion of the universities.

Q10. Why The Decision To Replace 12th Marks With CUET?

Jagdish Kumar said that the CUET 2022 exam will make the vision of ‘one country, one entrance test’ a reality. According to him, it will be a great relief for candidates as they will no longer have to appear for entrance exams at multiple universities. Besides, the fact that in some central universities the cut-off marks for UG admissions go as high as 100% has been a cause of concern for several years. The CUET, he believes, will be able to finally address it.
