IIM Placements 2022; Top B-Schools Had To Refused Company Offers

After a year of low placements due to the Covid 19 pandemic, B-schoolers are finally witnessing a sudden surge in hiring trends across the industry. Some are calling it ‘revenge hiring’, connecting it with the phenomenon of ‘revenge tourism’ that prevailed last year. 

From constant dread and concern over placements in 2021, the new year has come like a ray of sunshine for B-schoolers. In fact, this year, most top B-schools in India have not only broken all previous placement records but some have even recorded the best placement season ever! 

Believe it or not, SPJIMR Mumbai had to send an apology letter to 57 recruiters saying that the placement process has already been completed. On the other hand, at the Indian School of Business (ISB), two offers were rolled out per student during the final placement season. 

As a result, amidst this positive turn in B-school placements, one key question begs to be asked - how are the IIMs doing?

Key Highlights of IIM Placements 2022

• All of the IIMs saw 100% of the students placed during the final placement season. 
• The outgoing batch in many of the IIMs witnessed a 20 to 30 % hike in the average salary and median package from the previous year.
• Along with legacy recruiters, there were several first-time recruiters that included many top names in the industry.
• The number of students who received pre-placement offers during this year’s placement drive at the Indian Institute of Management was also significantly high.
• IIM Lucknow was the best performer among all the IIMs, securing the highest international CTC of INR 61 LPA.

Reasons Behind Increased Placement 

According to experts, there are three major reasons behind this positive turn: 

1. Improved business outlook in the post-Covid market.
2. Unleashing of pent-up demand among most recruiters.
3. A general optimism across all market sectors.

Final Placement Reports of IIMs

1. IIM Lucknow

Indian Institute of Management Lucknow has completed the Final Placements for 2020-22 for the post-graduate program (PGP36) and agro-business management (ABM17) courses, where 100% of the students got placed. One of the highest packages among all the IIMs was recorded at the institute this year.

• The highest domestic salary at the institute was INR 58 LPA.
• The highest international CTC was INR 61.59 LPA. 
• A total of 534 offers were rolled out to 491 students.
• The average salary also witnessed a significant rise compared to 2021. 
• The institute saw the participation of more than 150 recruiters in the placement drive where Consulting, Finance and General Management emerged as the top sectors.

IIM Lucknow Placement Overview

 2. IIM Indore

A total of 572 students in the two-year flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) and 5-year Integrated Programme at IIM Indore participated in the placement drive.

• The average package at IIM Indore witnessed a record-breaking rise going up by 6% from the previous year.
• The highest package stood at a whopping INR 49 Lakh Per Annum. 
• For the top 100 students, IIM Indore benchmarked an average salary of INR 37.95 Lakh Per Annum. Whereas, for the top 200, it was INR 32.75 Lakh Per Annum. 
• Among the 180 recruiters who participated in the drive, 30+ were first-time recruiters at the institute.

IIM Indore Placement Overview

3. IIM Udaipur

IIM Udaipur - one of the newly established IIMs - saw 100% of the students in the 1-year full-time MBA in Global Supply Chain Management course. The Digital Enterprise Management batch also saw 100% placements with salaries rising considerably this year. 

• A combined total of 278 roles were offered across the two batches.
• 28 students in Global Supply Chain Management had a work experience of 3-5 years, while 9 students had more than 5 years of work experience.
• 26 students in the Digital Enterprise Management batch had 3-5 years of work experience, while 11 students in the batch had more than 5 years of work experience.  
• Compared to the previous year, both the batches witnessed a significant rise in salaries.

IIM Udaipur Placement Overview

4. IIM Visakhapatnam

The students at IIM Visakhapatnam were one of the biggest gainers in the 2022 placement season. In fact, the institute witnessed the best campus placement season in its history in 2022, as the median salary went by 25% from last year. 

• The average CTC clocked at INR 14.6 Lakh Per Annum - a rise of 16% over the previous year. 
• Over 75 companies participated in the process, and there were 40 first-time recruiters in the mix as well. 
• Top 50% of the students at the institute received an average CTC of INR 16.75 LPA, while for the top 10% it was INR 20.13 LPA. 
• The median salary at the institute was INR 15 LPA, a rise of 25% from 2021.

IIM Visakhapatnam Placement Overview

5. IIM Amritsar

Among the third-generation Indian Institute Management, the B-school at Amritsar managed to place the largest batch of students in the 2022 Final Placements season. Most of the jobs at IIM Amritsar came through case competitions and hiring challenges, which translated into pre-placement offers. 

• The average CTC witnessed the highest year-on-year growth of 15.38%, standing at INR 14.63 LPA this year.
• More than 230 offers were rolled out by the 110 recruiters participating in the final placement drive this year. 
• Among the 50 first-time recruiters, many were big names in the industry.

IIM Amritsar Placement Overview

6. IIM Rohtak

IIM Rohtak recorded 100% placement in this year’s Final Placements. The average CTC went up by 16% from last year. It was one of the best placement drives in the institute's history. 

• The total strength of the batch was 233, with students from engineering backgrounds comprising the majority. 
• More than 80 recruiters participated in the placement process and among them, 40 were first-time recruiters.
• The average CTC for the top 50% of students stood at INR 18.9 LPA, while the highest CTC offered was INR 30 LPA.

7. IIM Sambalpur

Even though IIM Sambalpur falls among the newly-established IIMs, it witnessed the participation of 100+ recruiters in the Final Placements this year. A total of 219 roles across different sectors were offered to a diverse batch of students. 

• International recruiters also joined the drive and the highest international salary package stood at INR 41 LPA. 
• The highest domestic package was INR 30 LPA. 
• The highest CTC in the 2020-22 batch saw a rise of 24.71% from the previous year, while the average package rose by 12.68%. 
• Moreover, close to 50% of the batch had a work experience of between 0 to 12 months.

IIM Sambalpur Placement Overview

8. IIM Ahmedabad

IIM-Ahmedabad, the top B-school in the IIM family, has completed its final placements for three clusters. In the third cluster, 50% of the offers were from international recruiters.  

• In the first cluster, a total of 70 companies visited IIM Ahmedabad and conducted the placement process in a completely virtual mode. 
• Many new recruiters also joined the drive across cohorts, which included several stalwarts in the industry. 
• In Cluster 1, the top recruiter was Boston Consulting Group which rolled out 47 offers.
• In the 2nd and 3rd clusters, consumer goods and durable firms made the highest number of offers.

9. IIM Bodh Gaya

The MBA batch of 2020-22 at IIM Bodh Gaya recorded 100% placements during the Final Placement drive. The batch size this year was the largest ever, but still, the institute managed to do exceptionally well in year’s placements.

• The total batch strength at IIM Bodh Gaya this year was 184.
• The average package was logged at INR 12.36 LPA.
• The highest CTC rose by 73.41% while the average CTC rose by 24.49%.
• The majority of the offers at IIM-BG came from E-commerce, followed by BFSI & Media and Communications.

10. IIM Calcutta

Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, one of the oldest IIMs in the country, saw 190 firms participating in the Final Placement drive. The median CTC at the institute was INR 31 LPA - a 14% rise from last year.

• A total of 613 offers were put out for 476 students across multiple courses.
• The consulting sector was the top recruiter at IIM Calcutta Final Placements 2022, rolling out 49% of the total offers.
• BFSI was close behind consulting recording 18% of the total number of offers.
• Product Management and Operations jointly made 19% of the total offers, whereas General Management and Marketing offered 14% of the jobs

11. IIM Bangalore

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was able to place all the students in the batch in just two days. It was a record Placement Season at the institute as the number of offers exceeded the number of participants.

• A total of 513 students participated in the Final Placement drive at IIM Bangalore receiving 662 offers.
• It was a 37% increase in the total number of offers from the previous year.
• Among the top recruiters were Consulting, IT & Project Management, Finance & E-commerce.

12. IIM Kozhikode

IIM Kozhikode successfully completed its summer placements for the PGP- Finance (PGP-F) and PGP- Liberal Studies and Management (PGP-LSM) batches. 100% placements were recorded in just three days rolling out 571 offers in total.

• The average CTC for the batch was INR 29.5 LPA - a 31.3% increase from the previous year.
• A total of 116 recruiters participated in the drive and 571 students from the institute received offers.
• 41% of the offers were in the domain of Consultancy, 15% were in BFSI, 15% in IT & Analytics, and 13% in Sales ad Marketing.
• Among the 116 recruiters who participated in the placement drive this year, 39 were first-time recruiters.

13. IIM Shillong

The only Indian Institute of Management in North East India, IIM Shillong created a record in this year’s summer placements by securing the highest CTC of INR 55.22 LPA. It was the largest batch in the history of the institute's admission records. 

• The top 20% of the batch witnessed an increase of 17% in the average salary
• Female students in the batch received an average salary of INR 24.05 LPA.
• The number of offers in Human Resource and Operations increased by 80% from last year.
• 30% of the roles offered by the Consulting sector, followed by Sales & Marketing at 19% and Finance at 18%.
• Roles in General Management saw a 48% increase in the average salary from 2021.

Summer Placement Reports of IIMs

14. IIM Ranchi 

IIM Ranchi completed the Summer Placements for the 2020-22 batch for the flagship MBA and MBA in HR Programmes. The current batch at the Management School contained a healthy pool of students from diverse backgrounds, including Engineering, Science, Commerce, and Accounting. 

• In the MBA batch, the highest salary was INR 3.36 Lakhs, while in the MBA-HR batch it was INR 2.89 Lakhs.
• The average salary package in MBA was INR 97,502 and in MBA-HR it was INR 1,00,694.
• 46% of the students in the MBA batch were freshers, and 33% had work experience between 12 to 35 months.
• A total of 135 recruiters participated, among whom 68 were first-time recruiters.
• The total batch strength - including both the courses was 329, out of which 44% were female candidates.

IIM Ranchi Placement Overview

15. IIM Raipur

During the Summer Placements at IIM Raipur this year, the largest batch of students to date was successfully placed through the campus. Recruiters across the industry have shown immense faith in the talent pool of IIM Raipur, making its performance one of the best among the colleges in the IIM family.

• Total batch strength at the placement drive was 260. 
• Most of the students had an average work experience of 0 -11 months.
• 73% of the students were Engineering graduates.
• Among the 120+ recruiters who participated, more than 50+ were first-timers.
• The average stipend for the top 50% of the batch was INR 1.16 Lakhs.
• Around 33% of students in the batch were placed in the IT/ITES sector.

IIM Raipur Placement Overview

16. IIM Trichy

In the latest summer placement season of IIM Trichy, 100% of the batch took up offers with top companies. The batch came with a diverse academic background and work experience.

• The total batch strength, including both the courses, stood at 262.
• 76% of the students came from an engineering background.
• About 50% of the batch had work experience between 12 to 35 months.
• The top 25% of students in PGPM received an average CTC of INR 1.61 Lakhs.
• 28% of the students took up offers in Sales & Marketing, followed by 20% each for BFSI & General Management. 

IIM Trichy Placement Overview

17. IIM Kashipur

The Summer Placement at IIM Kashipur saw 100% offers for the flagship MBA and the inaugural MBA in Analytics batches. The academic background of students at the institute was quite diverse with more than 40% coming from non-engineering backgrounds.

• The total batch strength combining MBA & MBA in Analytics stood at 330. 
• A total of 373 offers were made across the two batches.
• While the highest stipend was clocked at INR 3.3 Lakhs, students received INR 80,649 on average.
• The majority of the students in the batch were male as it saw a rise of 160% in the number of female candidates.
• Among the 114 recruiters participating, more than 40 were first-time recruiters.
• Over 43% of the batch had no work experience.

18. IIM Nagpur

IIM Nagpur completed the summer placements for its flagship two-year residential PGP programme in management. With almost double the number of intakes from the previous year, the institute managed to place 100% of the students during the drive.

• A total of 208 students participated in the placement drive where the majority were from Engineering backgrounds.
• More than 15% of the students got placed in the BFSI sector, followed by Edtech at 13.09% and FMCG/FMCD and IT/ITES at 12.04% each.
• The average salary of the top 50% of students was INR 95,200.
• Over 58% of the jobs were in the Sales & Marketing domain.
• 43.65% of the students had work experience of more than 3 years.

IIM Nagpur Placement Overview

19. IIM Sirmaur

Established in 2015, IIM Sirmaur is among the new-generation IIMs. About 80% of the students took up on-campus offers, while the rest got placed through off-campus means or on sources.

• The total batch size was 187 and out of that 150 students took up on-campus offers.
• The median package for the batch stood at INR 20000 while the average for the top 50% was INR 52,329.
• 36% of the students in the 2022 batch took up offers in Ed-Tech. 24% each was recorded for E-commerce and IT/ITES.
• Several students from the batch took up offers in Sales & Marketing.

IIM Sirmaur Placement Details

20. IIM Jammu

IIM Jammu successfully placed 100% of the students in its 5th MBA batch this year. It was a highly diverse batch in terms of several parameters like academic background, ethnicity, and work experience. 

• The MBA batch comprised 223 students and there was 1 offer for every student during the placement drive.
• 30 offers among 233 were through lateral placements.
• 48% of the batch came from an engineering background and only 35% had prior work experience.
• The top 50% received an average stipend of INR 67,367.
• BFSI recruited 29.51% of students from the batch, followed by FMCG at 25.56%.
