Cummins Redefine Strategy Challenge 2018 National Finalist NMIMS Debopam Ghosh's Story
I always believed that participating in business case study challenges enables one to develop a thorough understanding of not just the problem at hand but also of the industry one is talking about. It also provides umpteen opportunities for self-growth. After participating in a few marketing case study challenges, it was time to get my hands dirty in a strategy based case study challenge.
It was a challenging case, on building a roadmap for Cummins Redefine Strategy Challenge 2018 to make them the leaders in electrified products and solutions. My funda was very simple: "Bigger the Challenge, More the Learning". So, without a second thought, I participated in the competition. Also, I was fortunate enough to have some bright people in our batch who used to keep me on my toes. They encouraged us and kept our spirits high!
As soon as they released the case, we started working on it. Our daily routine found an additional- sit for 2 hours in the night to brainstorm our ideas. We worked on the problem for almost a month, the most challenging phase being fitting our ideas into the recommended 5 slides. Another challenge was managing the case submission along with other activities of the college.
Our team’s bond of friendship and the ability to understand each other grew stronger along the journey. Each member had some sort of expertise like Subhadip was excellent in researching, Aditi in creating and estimating financial models, Abik was good with preparing a structure and making a presentation, and I was responsible for generating GTM ideas and applying different strategic models.
Conflict among friends is a rare thing but yes, we used to contradict each other's ideas. This really helped us. Our team's strengths were diversity and balance. Each of us was good at different things and together, we were able to bring in all the skills from various fields to achieve the ultimate goal.
Finale saw the participation of a total of 5 teams. SPJIMR had always been a tough competitor. It is like India vs Pakistan cricket match when SPJIMR and NMIMS are in the finals. In all the finals that I have reached, SPJIMR’s teams gave the best presentations.
The competition was structured and organized really well. The judgment coming from the esteemed panel of judges was of excellent quality. We got to know about the new upcoming projects of Cummins from the business leaders. Interacting with all the business leaders of the company during the high tea organized by the company was the icing on the cake.
