Swami Shraddanand and Hansraj, two colleges within the Delhi University currently providing IAS coaching facilities have been instructed by the varsity to discontinue the classes.

The matter emerged when the Democratic Teacher’s Front (DTF) wrote a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University regarding some colleges of DU entertaining private coaching centres. Hansraj and Swami Shraddanand were highlighted in the letter as the college facilities are being used to charge a significant amount of fees from students for the coaching.

The DU dean of colleges, Balram Pani has stated that an inquiry will be held as these colleges are not allowed to do so.

"Colleges are not allowed to do so. They are an educational institution. They cannot start giving coaching to students. I will call an enquiry into it. They are purely academic institutes for academic purposes. They cannot only give coaching to those who pay and leave other students behind," he said.

In another recent occurrence, Ramanujan College advertised its plan of conducting CUET coaching classes for school students, which was soon withdrawn due to an adverse public reaction.

As per the details displayed on Hansraj’s website, the fee structure of the coaching classes is based on the 12th percentage and can vary from a minimum of INR 75,000 to a maximum of INR 1,50,000. Swami Shraddanand was planning to commence the classes in the following months having a course fee of INR 1,50,000 with up to 25% scholarships.

“The fact that all these details have been notified unabashedly on their college websites seriously derails the purpose and role of public-funded institutions to impart quality subsidised education for all sections of society,” said Jitendra Kumar Meena, a DUTA executive.

DU’s Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said there had been no inkling that the colleges were providing coaching. Members of the DU academic council fear that the names of reputed DU colleges are falling prey to the schemes of ‘coaching sharks’.
