For two consecutive years, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM A) and the Indian School of Business (ISB) have kept their streak in the top 100 Economist MBA Rankings. However, this year the two prominent business institutions from India have fallen on the table by several places.

IIM Ahmedabad has dropped 48 places to 99th in The Economist MBA Rankings 2022, while ISB has dropped 31 places to 75th.

In 2019, IIM Ahmedabad was the only participating institute from India, ranking 75th.

Surprisingly, neither IIM Ahmedabad nor ISB has been ranked across multiple criteria.

Last year, for example, the institutes were ranked on personality development and professional experience (both institutes received Grade C in 2021), faculty-student ratio (both institutes received Grade E in 2021), and student-faculty diversity (ISB - D grade, IIM-A - E grade in 2021).

Nevertheless, this year's ranking table does not assign them a grade based on these parameters.

According to Professor Ramabhadran Thirumalai, the deputy dean of academic programs at the ISB, the drastic drop in the performance index of the institute is a result of the participation of US Business Schools this year.

“Many top-ranking B-Schools, including Harvard, Wharton, Kellog, and Stanford did not participate last year. This year, not only did they participate, but they clinched the top positions and consequently, most institutes have been pushed down, including ISB,” said Thirumalai. Nevertheless, The Indian School of Business is still the top-ranked institute in India and has also ranked fifth in Asia.

This year, Harvard Business School's full-time MBA program is first on the list, followed by the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in second and third place, respectively.

Evidently, American business schools hold nearly two-thirds of the top 50 spots in this year's ranking. Many of them refused to participate in the rankings last year due to concerns about The Economist's ranking methodology.

ISB’s grade on various parameters such as “potential to network” and “student/alumni rating of program content” has visibly degraded. According to Professor Thirumalai, an analysis of the data released is under process. Concerns regarding these parameters will be discussed with students and alumni as well, according to Thirumalai.

The Economist collects data in the following ways:

  • School data (80 percent)
  • Student surveys (20 percent)

School data includes things like average GMAT scores and alumni salaries. According to The Economist’s official website,

“The statistical methodology adopted for the ranking gives each business school a unique score (known to statisticians as a z-score). Unlike some other rankings, we do not include any ‘equal’ schools. For this reason, individual school profiles now include a banding (A-E), so that schools with similar overall scores are grouped together.”

“As academics, we do not fully understand the parameters used and what they mean. It is likely that the school has not featured in the top 100 in a particular parameter where a grade has not been awarded this year,” says Professor Ramabhadran Thirumalai.
