How my first internship taught me important life lessons -By Tushar Swami from DBE DU

The moment we step into a B-School, there's only one goal we start working towards and that is getting an Internship. I did the same. I prepared for Aptitude exams and Group Discussions, read as many Case Studies as I could. Most importantly, I participated in competitions on Dare2Compete in order to earn brownie points. Further, I adorned my CV with those achievements. A month later, all this hard work paid off. I got an excellent internship in a Market Research Firm. My role during the internship was that of a Consultant.

The next goal was to score well in the First-year exams. When I got over with them on the D-Day, my joining date came. From the very first day of my internship, it was in front of me. I had multiple projects assigned to me (and I used to think that only an MBA can be this exhaustive). But the good part was that I learned a lot in the last two months. It made me a better professional and even more ready for this year's placement sessions.

I don't want to sound dramatic but during the internship period, I missed my college terribly. The day I reached back, all the last year's memories flashed in front of my eyes (you know like it's shown in the movies).

As soon as I reached college, we were all ready to welcome the freshers' batch, select new committee members and begin with our old (full-day tiring) class routines. We again had to deal with daily group exercises, presentations, case studies, and homework. But this time, there was something exciting about all of this. That’s maybe because it has been two months since we hadn’t indulged in such activities. All of this appeared to be fun and not at all debilitating or frustrating. So, I have decided to take advantage of this opportunity. I’ll extract the most out of these days till I start hating this routine all over again (just kidding!).

This internship experience made me learn something else as well. I understood how monotonous and boring job-life actually is and how much it matters to enjoy every single day left of our college life. Once we graduate, we won’t come across selfless friends (who are there for us during all ups and downs) or frequent occasions (these college fests, night outs, hours of playing FIFA with hostel-mates on weekends, and these inter B-School events) to enjoy to the fullest. All we will be left with is day-long office work and family duties to fulfill alongside.

So, my advice would be to never neglect the fun we can have (during our college life) in the heat of preparing for competitions, internships, and placements. There indeed are the ultimate goals of students entering a B-School. But time slips like sand from our hand. We must not forget to savor the journey while preparing for our destination!
