'A good teacher is like a candle; it consumes itself to light the way for others.' The quote certainly stands true for IAS Arun Kumar, who left his job to train UPSC IAS aspirants for free.

As IAS coaching centers spring up in every nook and corner of cities across the country, the UPSC Civil Services Exam is inadvertently tilting in favor of those who can afford to take the coaching classes. Roping in ex-IAS officers and professors from top colleges at hefty salary packages, the IAS coaching institutes claim to provide everything it takes to crack the prestigious exam. In return, the institutes charge exorbitant fees beyond the reach of many deserving aspirants.

Arun Kumar wanted to plug in this gap. With a motive to make coaching accessible to all, Kumar started conducting morning classes at Kali Ghat and Gandhi Ghat in Patna and became a messiah for the financially underprivileged students.

Wife became a source of inspiration

For Arun Kumar, the motivation to take the plunge came from his wife. Kumar was deeply moved when his wife, Ritu Jaiswal, showed him a video of students preparing for government exams at Ganga Ghat. She believed that the students could do much better if they had a guiding force behind them. Kumar, who was already taking free tuition at home, decided to start his free classes at Ganga Ghat.

To dedicate himself fully to this service, Kumar voluntarily retired as Commissioner, Departmental Enquiry. He began his classes in May 2022 with 20 students under his tutelage. The number has increased to over 500 students. The special river-front classes are purely reserved for students with limited means. For others who seek his guidance, there is an online website, Magnusias.com.

The power of giving

During his childhood years, Arun Kumar had a humble upbringing. He completed his graduation from St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, and then prepared for the IAS exam all by himself. However, for Kumar, the real success is in giving back to the society. He seeks to create an environment where money is not a barrier to education.

A mentor for hundreds of IAS aspirants, Kumar is a teacher who deserves true respect. Unstop wishes all such dedicated teachers a very Happy Teacher's Day!
