India is crazy about college tags. All you need is a degree from IIT or IIM to get placed on the citadel of eligibility. Apart from gaining instant attention, an IIT or IIM tag can make a person eligible for the highest paying jobs and even for IIT/IIM matrimonial sites (That’s true. Ever heard of iitiimshaadi.com?). But can an IIT or IIM tag help you sell your products more easily?

'Milking' Benefits?

Twitter is a land of opinions and any post can spark off strong reactions. In a recent tweet shared by a twitter user, a milk packet is shown to have the phrase, ‘founded by IIM Alumni’ written over it. This blatant use of the IIM alumni tag has opened doors for debate on the social media platform. While some people think that using such branding can help to generate trust amongst consumers, the majority of social media users believe that the quality of product matters more than the college tag. The tweet was shared by Namanbir Singh who shared the  photo of the milk packet, saying- “What’s the point of writing your college name on a milk packet???”

This generated a line of tweets with people venting out their reaction on the use of the IIM tag to promote a brand.

Some twitter users took a dig at the Indian parent's craze for the IIT IIM tag

What is your opinion of this matter? Is IIM tag effective to promote a company?
