IIT Hyderabad introduces M.Tech course on e-waste recycling

In order to search for effective methods and rational ways to recycle the electronic waste (e-waste), the faculty of IIT Hyderabad has joined hands with C-MET (Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology) and launched an M.Tech course on e-waste. During the launch of this course, which is duly labeled as “E-waste Resource Engineering and Management", the experts remarked in the virtual orientation programme that e-waste is rather an asset. The course on e-waste is built in order to provide accurate management of the e-waste as well as support the Government initiatives in the e-waste management.

This M.Tech course has attracted a lot of engineering students from different fields who will be co-administered by IIT Hyderabad and CMET, and the MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) has also decided to support the course. Dr. Chandra Shekhar Sharma who is the Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering in IIT Hyderabad and also the course coordinator reflected on the way the rapid advancement in technology and colossal growth in the electronics industry has led to the explosive growth in e-waste.

It is imperative to manage the electronic waste properly, owing to the serious health hazards it poses, said Dr. Sharma. The course on e-waste, then, becomes a great tool via which it becomes easier to recycle, reduce, safely dispose and effectively manage the e-waste, he added.

The Director of IIT Hyderabad, Professor B.S. Murthy remarked that it was about nine months ago when they signed the Memorandum of Understanding with C-MET so that with the help of this course on e-waste, students get practical experience along with theoretical knowledge. Professor Murthy added that this course will assist the students in working on a range of industry-oriented problems and MeitY will act as a catalyst.

The course entails a clear and better understanding of technologies that help in the recycling of e-waste. The topics will be related to plastic, recovery of metals, and acknowledging the life cycle analyses including the carbon footprint calculations. The role of Artificial Intelligence, as well as Supply and Chain Management, will also be covered in order to manufacture an effective and rational recycling system.
