Free Computer Science Courses For Everyone at IIT Madras; Even Students From Rural India Can Access

Ranked top among all the IITs by NIRF, IIT Madras, has made its Computer Science courses available for everyone free of cost. IIT Madras has taken this step in a bid to make high-quality education in Computer Science accessible to students, faculty in various institutes and whoever else is keen to learn from them.

The faculty at the institute has created an online portal through which interested students and faculty can check out the courses. The initiative is being seen as a major step towards making quality education accessible to rural India - a long-term vision of Prof. V. Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras.

On the official portal, interested students can access courses in the following areas of computer science:

As per reports, the content of the courses will be mostly available as YouTube recordings of live lectures taught to students at IIT-M during the lockdown.

Among all the streams of engineering, Computer Science is the most popular one as it offers a great chance of placements. However, in the IITs, the number of seats in this course is limited. The initiative is aimed to bridge that gap through virtual learning.

Prof. C. Chandra Sekhar, the HOD of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras said, "The recordings of live lectures for CSE core courses at the undergraduate level and the graduate level, by the faculty of them department are expected to be helpful to the students in engineering colleges to learn the underlying concepts and principles of the subject of these courses in the right manner."

"It will also be beneficial to the teachers in engineering colleges to get to know and effectively teach the important and fundamental subjects in computer science and engineering and how to equip students with problem-solving skills. It is hoped that the portal will be used to improve the quality of teaching and learning the CSE core subjects in Engineering colleges in India, " Prof Chandra Sekhar further added.

Dr. Rupesh Nasre, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras has stated that the portal is especially aimed at those students who could not study at IIT Madras for different reasons. He believes that rural students from Indian villages will now have access to the same material as IIT Madras.

"It will ensure that quality material is accessible to all students," he added.

To make the initiative easy to access, the department is planning to engage senior students who will conduct live tutorial sessions where the doubts of students will also be clarified through regular interaction.

Students taking part in the initiative will have to attend quizzes and measure their level of understanding of the topics through the courses.
