The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur has made a significant decision that would undoubtedly affect the general character of education at the institute. It has officially decided that students may withdraw from their courses at any point during their course schedule in order to pursue other professional endeavours. They must finish the degree within eight years.
Earlier, if students were to leave before completing three years in the institute, their admission would be cancelled. However, this will no longer be the case. This decision was made due to a lot of students wishing to study different courses within the period of their engineering degree. While this is sure to offer greater flexibility, students are only allowed to leave after they have completed two years of education in the institute.
How Does It Work?
Each student is assigned a ‘Virtual Academic Credit Bank’ where they will accumulate academic credit points over two years. Once they have the required amount of credits, the students are free to enrol in any other university and continue their studies at NIT Jamshedpur once they have completed it.
It was considered in the 38th NIT Senate Meeting led by Dr KK Shukla and will be in line for implementation once discussed in the Board of Studies. Rather than at once, the scheme will be implemented in different stages.
