IIT Madras Opens Its First Online BSc Program In Data Science For Students From India & Bahrain

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is inviting applications for its online Bachelor’s Programs in Programming and Data Science. Touted to be the world’s first BSc Degree program in Programming and Data Science, the institute is opening this program for the students of Bahrain as well.

IIT Madras Program Details

The online program is open to everyone regardless of their age, location, or academic background. Hence, students who have appeared for their Class 11 final exams can also apply irrespective of their group/stream/board. Those who qualify can join the program after passing Class 12. Students currently studying in Class XII may join the program after they have completed their board exams.

Program structure

• The program is designed with the learner's convenience in mind. 
• Weekly content would be released on a portal for anytime access. 
• All examinations are required to be taken in person at designated centers opted by the students, for ensuring the credibility of the learning assessment.
• The application process includes four weeks of training comprising of video lectures, weekly assignments, a discussion forum, and live interactions with professors and course instructors.
• Applicants must take the qualifier examination in person, which is based solely on these four weeks of content. The candidates who score higher than the minimum cut-off will be admitted to the foundation level of the BSc in Programming and Data Science.
• For Bahrainian students, the qualifier exam has to be written at the exam centers in Bahrain itself.

IITs presence in the Arab world

Lately, IITs are making their presence felt in the Arab countries. India had recently signed an FTA (Free Trade Agreement) with the UAE in which both the countries have recognized the value of enhancing the workforce productivity in the Arabic nation. In line with this agreement, the government of India is establishing an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the first government educational institute to be set up abroad. 

As per the Indian Government’s new National Education Policy, the high-performing universities and institutions are encouraged to establish offshore centers, permitting the ‘Institutions of Eminence’ to set up foreign campuses after receiving permission from the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs. Keeping this in view, IIT Delhi has been engaged in discussions with Egypt and Saudi Arabia on the construction of IIT campuses in the said countries. 

Steps such as these will help to upskill the workforce of these countries, which presently heavily depend on the Indian workforce to meet their labor demands.
