Record placement season at IIT
With the economy slowly catching up as the pandemic eases out, the companies are on a recruitment spree to hire the best candidates. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have received record pre-placement offers (PPOs) for the class of 2022
“It is a welcome trend,” said Prof Vinay Sharma, professor in charge of placement and internship at IIT Roorkee.
With the acceleration of digitalization, demand for tech talent has witnessed a surge. The demand for freshers is at an all-time high as companies want to recruit talented individuals and train them for the new-age technologies. This has further increased the importance of college placements.
“The rush is due to an increase in hiring requirements of huge tech firms. Due to more startups going for IPOs (initial public offerings), they are also looking at expansion,” said a student representative at the placement cell of IIT Kanpur.
IIT Pre-placement offers: Demographics
PPOs (pre-placement offers) are rolled out to candidates exhibiting exceptional skills while pursuing their internships. This facilitates the employers to further assess the candidates before absorbing them as full-time employees.
IITs in Chennai, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Mandi, and Jodhpur have seen a 22-55% year-on-year increase in offers, even before the final placement season kicks off for the older IITs next month, as explained by the placement officials at these institutes.
Tech Mahindra’s global chief people officer Harshvendra Soin explained, “Hiring through PPOs gives both the parties, the candidate and the company, a chance to assess each other for a long-term commitment. We have increased our hiring from leading IITs and other engineering colleges by giving PPOs.”
The major companies that rolled out PPOs:
Amazon | Flipkart | Qualcomm | Microsoft |
DE Shaw | Adobe | American Express | |
Cisco | Goldman Sachs | JPMorgan Chase | Standard Chartered |
1. IIT Roorkee
IIT Roorkee received a total of 214 PPOs across multiple job roles. Last year, IIT Roorkee had received 154 PPOs, indicating a positive growth of 39%! Out of the 214 PPOs, students accepted 154 PPOs in contrast to 137 PPOs of the last year.
“The pandemic has brought some directional changes in the placement scenario wherein companies related to AI, software, network, analytics, etc., have been aggressive in hiring as compared to manufacturing, infrastructure or core sector at large,” said Vinay Sharma, professor in charge of placement and internship at IIT Roorkee.
2. IIT Madras
IIT Madras received 227 PPOs in 2021, while it had received 186 last year. The highest package was INR 46.5 lakh per annum, up by 29% as compared to INR 35.98 lakh last year.

The rush for grabbing PPOs
For a second consecutive year, the PPO process was implemented through the online mode. With the trend for internships picking up pace, PPOs have become a vital way for students to grab the best opportunities in the field of their interests.
CS Shankar Ram, advisor (training and placement), IIT-Madras, explained, “Internship process provides a good opportunity for companies to evaluate our students who intern with them over an extended period. "It also helps our students to learn more about the company, the roles that they may be offered, and potential career prospects."
