A government job not only promises decent pay but job security as well, and this stability and security is what most engineers in India seek. Many engineers look forward to securing a position in Indian Railways for the same reason, and Indian Railway Management Service Examination (IRMSE) is the gateway to that position.
To streamline the selection process and make it easy, the Ministry of Railways in consultation with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has decided that recruitment to IRMS will be conducted by the UPSC through a specially designed examination, effective from 2023.
Pattern of examination
The Indian Railway Management Services Examination will be two-fold: A preliminary examination, followed by a main written examination and interview. In order to make it to the IRMS (main) Examination, candidates must appear and clear the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination.
The IRMS (main) Examination will consist of four papers (conventional essay type):
Paper 1: One Indian language to be selected by the candidate from the languages included in the eighth schedule of the constitution. (300 marks)
Paper 2: English (300 marks).
Paper 3: Optional subject (250 marks)
Paper 4: Optional subject (250 marks)
This will be followed by a Personality test that will carry 100 marks.
The candidates can choose any one from the following optional subjects.
- Civil engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Electrical engineering
- Commerce and accountancy
Papers 1 and 2 are the qualifying papers, and papers 3 and 4 will be considered for merit. The syllabi of the aforementioned papers and subjects remain the same as those for the CSE (Civil Services Examination).
