Every year lakhs of candidates appear for management entrance test to grab a seat in the top B-schools worldwide. A total of 1,73,176 candidates appeared for GMAT 2020 worldwide. In India alone 1.9 lakh candidates sit for CAT, scores of which are used for admission to the top IIMs and other B-schools in the country.
But there are some inside realities of the life of an MBA student which remain unknown to most of the candidates aspiring to do an MBA. It is important that the candidates are aware about them for better preparation of life ahead. Some of these hard truths are:
1. You will be tested constantly
There will be innumerable times when you will be challenged and tested. Since all the students who get admissions to the top B-schools are smart and intelligent so you will constantly feel the need to prove yourself better than others and what different and unique things you can offer.
Whether it be applying for internships and jobs or various competitions conducted in your institution you will have to work extra harder so that you can grab the best opportunities for yourself. All these challenges if taken in a positive spirit will change you into a much better and stronger person than you were when you entered the premises of your B-school.
Rather than succumbing to the pressure situations you will have to act bravely and make the most out of them. Rather than competing with your peers try to learn from them and their experiences. Always try to push your limits and participate in activities that are out of your comfort zone. It will make you more confident and fearless.
2. You will meet a diverse group of people
Most B-schools try to diversify their batches every year. Diversity can be of various types such as gender diversity, international student diversity, socio-economic diversity, ethnic diversity, sexual diversity, previous academic programme diversity.
It will allow you to get to know people from various backgrounds and interact with them. You will learn about their opinions, culture, beliefs and much more and share yours with them. This can be a very big asset for you to have the chance to interact with people who are different from you.
But more opinions means more debates and more diverging viewpoints which can be a trouble as it can lead to conflicts among students. As a mature individual you will learn how to handle them and have healthy conversations where every individual respects each other's opinions.
3. You will have very little time left for your loved ones
The MBA curriculum is very grueling and most of the time you will be left with almost no time to talk to your loved ones. There will be an endless number of things that will always keep you occupied such as internships, competitions, projects, reports, and many more. Many times you will feel the emptiness inside you and the urge to have a long break. But that is the time when you will have to be strong and focused on your goal.
The more you try to be in the moment and stop taking your daily work as a burden, the easier the MBA journey will become for you. Remember this hectic schedule will not last long and once your MBA is over you can always go back to your loved ones.
4. Every day will be tiring and draining
The MBA course curriculum along with an endless list of other activities that you will have to complete to get the job of your dreams will definitely drain all your energy. The challenges you will face at the mental, as well as physical level, will leave you with no time to relax.
The tasks that you will be expected to do everyday will not be routine or repetitive ones so everyday you will have to expand your intellectual capacity and think out of the box in order to stand out among other equally talented individuals.
Sleep will always be an issue and you will always feel the lack of it but as it is said that sacrifices are a must if you wish to succeed in life and bear the fruits of your immense hard work.
5. You will transform into a better version of yourself
The variety of opportunities and experiences that you will gain during an MBA will change you into a much better and stronger version of yourself.
The course curriculum, meeting with students from diverse backgrounds, interacting with professionals and experienced people in the field of management, internships, all these experiences will be happening constantly during your MBA journey and in the end you will realize that these will be your invaluable life learnings which will prepare you to face any bigger challenge further ahead in life.
The journey will definitely not be an easy one. There will be highs as well as lows. It will completely depend on you on how you take them and come out stronger. As an MBA student from a reputed B-school, at the end of this roller coaster ride you will find that your life has changed for the better and forever!
