L&T OutThink Case Study Challenge 2018 National Finalist SCMHRD Rajeesh's Story
L&T OutThink Case Study Challenge 2018 is one of the most unique competitions which tested the fundamental understanding of core infrastructure and financial principles. Also, I wanted to challenge myself and check how will I manage different things simultaneously and what better time for it than during the semester examinations. So, I prepared in my mind for the challenges ahead and dove head first into the competition.
We were working on the problem even before the launch of the competition in our college. So, in a way, we had a head start. A lot of research papers were referred, many stakeholders were contacted and their opinions were noted. It was a gargantuan-sized case. So, we broke down all the points and segregated them to facts, problems, risks, and opportunities. Then, we decided to work only on those problems which affected the problem objective and the profitability of the project. We were working at the rate of 1 question per day and wrapped up all of them in 7 days.
Our team was the poster picture for the pillar of strength. It was a joy to work with brilliant-minded people. We respected each other and gave enough space to work in each individual’s field of interest. Besides, we maintained the balance between our team spirit and the level of competitiveness at all points of time. We did have conflicts on time management but we resolved them immediately. Proper selection of team members and knowing their strengths, weaknesses, and priorities also helped us to overcome the conflicts.
Our team's forte was the relentlessness and the depth each person was willing to go to for a solution. Also, the team had a clear understanding of what tool to use to analyze the problem and how to view the problem differently and identify the noises which L&T purposefully planted in the case.
There were 8 teams in the finale of L&T OutThink Case Study Challenge 2018. The team from IIM Lucknow was one of our toughest competitors in the competition. They were able to present the facts and tackle the jury's questions skillfully. The judgement quality was one of the best. Moreover, the judges' panel included eminent personalities who had solved the case in real life.
The key learning through this competition was how to present an idea attractively, the importance of research, especially when you're having a highly technical case and at last, the fact that hard work never goes unnoticed!
