Microsoft has invited applications for its 12-week Virtual Research Internship which is scheduled to be commenced from May 2022. This program is for candidates who are passionate about technology and can offer diverse perspectives. Microsoft prides itself on celebrating differences. They are constantly on the lookout for people from diverse backgrounds which facilitates real brainstorming by pouring in different knowledge and experience. 

This internship aims to provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers. Researchers and engineers will deal in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

Roles and responsibilities of a research intern

During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to,

  • Put inquiry and theory into practice. 
  • Work alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers.
  • Contribute to exciting research and development strides.
  • Collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community.

Eligibility criteria 

  • Interested candidates must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, information science, or related subjects.
  • By the start of the internship program (~May 2022) candidates must have at least two years/multiple years of programming experience, completed courses in Calculus, Probability, and Statistics, and/or Machine Learning, or demonstrated training in at least one social science methodology.

Important points

  • Candidates are required to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. 
  • After the submission of the application, a request for letters may be sent to the list of references provided by the candidate.
  • Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after the application has been submitted.
  • Candidates may wish to alert the letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit their letters
  • Participation in the Microsoft Research Internship Program requires that you are physically located in the United States or Canada for the duration of the internship.
  • Research internships are available in all areas of research and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
