The Ministry of Education, under the Government of India, is offering 82,000 scholarships worth INR 70,000 under the National Scholarship Scheme (NSS) 2021. Students who have passed their class 12th examination and wish to pursue their higher education may apply for the same. The scheme was launched in the year 2018 to provide financial assistance to meritorious students who have a family income of less than INR 6 LPA to meet their day-to-day expenses while pursuing their higher education. The scholarship would be valid for a period of 5 years. Selected candidates will be paid an amount of INR 10,000 per annum for the first three years and INR 20,000 per annum for the next two years, the fourth and the final year.

Out of the 82,000 scholarships that will be distributed under the scheme every year, 41,000 of them are allocated for boys and the other 41,000 for girls. The Indian Government says that only those students who are above the 80th percentile of the successful candidates in the relevant stream from a particular Board of Examination in class 12th and are pursuing regular courses and not availing the benefit of any other scholarships are eligible to apply for the National Scholarship Scheme 2021. The scholarship amount will be disbursed directly into the bank account of the beneficiaries.

Important guidelines: National Scholarship Scheme 2021

One must take note that the National Scholarship Scheme (NSS) 2021 is not for students who are pursuing diploma courses and correspondence or distance mode courses. The students who wish to apply for this scheme should be pursuing regular courses in institutions or colleges that are recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), UGC Act, 1956, Medical Council of India, or Dental Council of India. If the applicants are availing the benefits of any other scholarship schemes including the State-run scholarships, or fee waiver and reimbursement schemes are not eligible to apply for the same.

The online applications of the students shall be verified at two levels - by the institute where the student is studying, and by the respective State Education Board. Any application that is not verified either by the concerned State Education Board or the institute or by both shall be treated as invalid. A scholarship under this scheme is renewable on year to year basis up to the postgraduate level in the same stream, except for the student pursuing technical courses leading to a degree at graduation level.
