Nestle's relationship with India dates back to 1912, when it began trading as The Nestle Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company (Export) Limited, importing and selling finished products in the Indian market. However, after India’s independence in 1947, Nestle established manufacturing units in Moga, Punjab to develop the milk economy of that area. Nestle has been a partner in India's growth for over a century now and has built a very special relationship of trust and commitment with the people of India.

Nestle being a big establishment of FMCG goods needs to maintain a steady supply of the goods to the market for the growth of the company. To smoothen this function Nestle came up with a brilliant idea to utilise the fresh minds of the B-school students to put in their bright ideas into the business. This was realised by organising the Plain-O-Chain contest.

Nestle Plain-O-Chain was held for the 7th time in 2017. The competition was open to the management students from NITIE, IIT–Mumbai, IIT-Delhi, SPJIMR and other campuses.

Nestle Plain-O-Chain 2017 sought answers to certain questions-

How important is logistics in a country like India? How important is it to manage raw material and finished products? Do you believe you can forecast demand?

Interested students were asked to form a 3-member team to participate in this supply-chain related case study competition. View the complete details of Nestle Plain-O-Chain 2017

To test the business acumen of the contestants, a case study comprising of fictitious data from 3 companies were given to the students and it was expected from them to develop an end to end supply chain strategy which had to be supported by a SWOT analysis so that both the vantage points of the plan and the shortcoming can be taken into consideration.

As the supply chain is an ongoing process so the strategy and the plan have to have every cure in its arsenal if anything untoward may befall to disrupt the operations.

In a large country like India with a developing infrastructure, logistics can be a huge issue. The teams tried their level-best with the available knowledge and analysis to put forward a well-planned report.

Out of the various participating teams, the team from SPJIMR Mumbai comprising of Samanvay Mathur, Madhur Sethi and Amit Shukla secured the first position followed by the team from NITIE Mumbai as the runner-up.
