RB Global Challenge: A competition that taught us how to handle business and marketing problems I Team Innovizers
It was a great experience overall. We worked our entire 1st term for this competition. You would have found us either talking about it or thinking about it. Since the social cause in consideration was to address the adverse impact on health caused by air pollution, we had to spend a lot of time coming up with ideas to promote the product to gain enough traction despite the low awareness levels.
Innovizers: When we learned to handle business and marketing problems
There were 8 teams who made it to the finals out of 12,000 entries. We considered the Teams from ISB Hyderabad and SIBM Pune as tough competitors, because their idea was very innovative and had decent gross margins. Moreover, we were fascinated to see the depths till which they went, to give their research and edge over the others.
The judges were very knowledgeable. They focused on how the idea would serve the masses at large. They gave a lot of emphasis on our approach towards addressing the problem and its impact. Financial viability, product promotion, and marketing mix were some of the parameters that were emphasized throughout. The competition had a 15-minute presentation round, followed by a Question & Answer Session. Moreover, it was delightful to find out that a few of our suggestions were already under consideration by the RB board.
Approach to solve society's most crucial needs, making effective presentations, FMCG industry dynamics, finding out the viability of business and marketing problems and strategies employable were a few lessons we took back home. Also, we learned how to work collaboratively in a team.
We had an opportunity to visit RB's R&D department as a part of the participant orientation program. The information that RB shared with all the students was very distinctive. We always thought claims like killing 99 percent germs, 8 times more effective, etc. were a marketing "globe" (as planet-i calls it). It was fascinating to find out that they have a separate team that tests these claims and gives a statistical significance to them.
Amongst us, Venkatesh had experience in IT Consulting, Abhishek was a fresher from NIT Patna, with a major in Mechanical Engineering and Ashish was an Economics major from SRCC. So it was an amalgamation of business, technical and industry experienced minds. A crazy coincidence to be honest.
Our teamwork and responsibilities
We had several differences while working on the project. Venkatesh took a diplomatic stand for every disagreement that surfaced. We got better as a team in due time. Also, we learnt the art of listening to others attentively and making them feel heard after this competition.
We have always been a bunch of misfits, but together we made a perfect team.
