Small decisions can bring major changes: Team Stellaris | National Finalists of ABG Stratos 2019

We worked for about a month and a half on ABG Stratos to reach the Grand Finale as National Finalists. We followed a simple strategy and worked on small targets, delivering them one by one. Rather than taking up all the issues in one go, we took small steps to achieve our targets.

The team and what made us special

A total of 10 teams made it to the Grand Finale across the top B-schools in India. The team from FMS Delhi which stood second was a tough contender as their plan looked foolproof and the financial viability of their project was on point. The judgement quality, organization and the competition framework was all to the point and entire process was coordinated and carried out smoothly.

We had strategically made our team with individuals having good work experience, minimum work experience and no work experience. The three of us were from different domains of Finance, Marketing and Operations. This helped us gain insights wherever necessary in addition to gaining perspectives in different dimensions. Working in a team turned out to be a great experience. We learnt a lot from each other and came across various approaches for problem-solving. In times of conflict, we would find a middle ground to solve it and choose the best approach for the competition.

How the competition helped us grow

We garnered an enormous amount of learning not only from the Grand Finale but during the entire journey of 1.5 months. The Business Simulation round, which was one of it's kind, taught us the art of multitasking in a company. It also provided us an insight into the workings of the company. The Campus round taught us how to express our ideas in a concise format, ensuring that its essence is not lost.

One of the most competitive rounds was Deep Dive. This round required us to give an in-depth action plan of our idea and explain how will it be carried out. There were a lot of factors that needed to be taken care of, in this round. This particular round taught us how focussing on multiple small decisions can bring about a major change. Finally, the Grand Finale arrived. An experience which will be cherished life-long, we got an opportunity to interact with industry stalwarts as well as students from other top B-schools. Over and above, it would have been difficult to garner such learnings within a short amount of time, had it not been for Stratos.

A memorable incident

One such incident that happened was in the last preliminary round of business simulation. We went with our gut instinct to maintain our position, against the popular norm of playing safe. The risk was tremendous because we were one of the top contenders. It turned out that our gut instinct was right and we qualified for the next round. It was a make or break moment for us. Had we not taken that decision, we wouldn't have been declared the national finalists of ABG Stratos 2019.
