In a bid to revive the current educational curriculum, IIT Roorkee has set afloat the Term (Quarter) system in its two-year MBA programme. Earlier, one single year was divided into two semesters but with this change, each year is bifurcated into four terms. To instill the spirit of innovation and research in the students, the novel structure focuses to steer excellence via expanding the knowledge base.
With this current initiative by IIT Roorkee, the institution joins the queue of reputed B-Schools of the country where the term system is running efficiently. Professor M. Parida who is the Deputy Director of IIT Roorkee stated that the implementation of the Term (Quarter) system will open new avenues for students with regard to the coming up of more diversified courses to enrich their knowledge base. The professor added that this will equip the students in thinking critically and will teach them the tricks to tackle the “challenges of Industry 4.0.”
The new structure, better results
The new structure of the Term (Quarter) system has been set since August 2020. This is indicative of the fact that the syllabus of the first-year would mostly comprise theoretical subjects and in the second year, they will be taught practically as far as corporate interactions, projects, industry visits, etc are concerned.
The eighth quarter, which will be the final term of the two-year MBA programme, will only constitute the Final Project. In this, the students shall be exposed to an open window of more practicality. The faculty mentors will also be able to devote more time and effort to help students in the consummation of the Project.
Sweeping knowledge: An expanse of disciplines
Professor M.K. Barua, the Head of Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee exclaimed that the Term (Quarter) system will blow the whistle on and bring to light an expanse of disciplines and students will also uncover the practical nature of the course.
In the other B-Schools, where the structure is functioning successfully, it has proven to upskill the students in tandem with the “requirements of the futuristic workforce.” The much-needed industry exposure and project works are the need of the growing market and will hone the skills of the students.
Striking features
There is an array of striking features that come with the introduction of the new programme of the Term (Quarter) system. It unveils a large number of disciplines to the students while also introducing 1 credit, 1.5 credits, and 2 credits that are welcoming of the new courses to the framework of the curriculum.
This also means that the students are free to choose their own electives from the fourth term itself. This is crucial because when students are taught the significant elective subjects from their first year, they get more knowledge and better-thinking abilities before the onset of the placement season.
