Even though all human beings are endowed with similar qualities and faculties it is a handful of people on this planet who are born leaders. One might wonder, what are the yardsticks to judge the Leader in you? Cognizant had the answer in the form of The CXO Challenge 2017.
Cognizant is a multinational corporation that provides IT services, including digital, technology, consulting, and operations services. It is headquartered in Teaneck, New Jersey, United States. It was founded as an in-house technology unit of Dun & Bradstreet in 1994 and started serving external clients in 1996. In 2017, Cognizant was named in Fortune's Future 50 list.
The CXO Challenge 2017 being a premium was open to students of select Business schools only on the basis of invitation. Participants were asked to form teams with a maximum of 4 members to register online.
The Challenge was spread across 4 different phases:
Phase 1
In the 1st phase of the challenge, each participating team had to take an MCQ aptitude test to prove their Quantitative and Verbal skills. And the evaluation for this was predominantly done online. Top 10 scorers got an opportunity to proceed to the next round. View the complete details of The CXO Challenge 2017 here.
Phase 2
This is where the participant gets an idea about the corporate culture after going through an orientation with the CXO's executive office. Post orientation each team was presented with a real-time CXO problem statement. This is where one had to exhibit their leadership skills. Since the role of a leader is bit challenging, who is overall in-charge of the entire vision, goal and execution, participants have to step into the shoes of the leaders and try emulating them to come up with a strategy.
Phase 3
Leaders are not made in one day, it is their experience, success and failures that make them well-seasoned to be one. Though it can be rather difficult to exhibit the leadership qualities in such a short span of time, Senior Leaders of Cognizant take this opportunity to mentor the new budding leaders at regular intervals.
Mentors provided timely feedback and progress checks on strategy response plan. Participants utilized this time to gather information and analyse the problem to bring out the best possible strategy to tackle it.
Phase 4
After having been a part of the CXO office for 2-3 weeks, the participants present their strategic response plan to the panel of judges. The strategy was evaluated on the grounds of its feasibility, depth of research and the impact it would create in the real-life both short-term and in the longer run.
Winners
Taking into consideration all the above points the judges declared the team comprising of Parth Vaswani, Nitin Chandak, Niraj Lodha and Sreetika Ray Mohapatra from IIM Calcutta as the winners of The CXO Challenge 2017, followed by the team from NMIMS as the runner-up. View the list of winners here.
CXO Challenge gave students an opportunity to interact with top decision makers in the industry. Mentorship provided by these leaders helped the students to get their ideas verified and was fine-tuned by top-level strategists.
Competitions like CXO Challenge are not just mere games, they are rigorous training that the participants go through to open up to ever-shifting business realities. It brings out the qualities which even the participants are unaware of themselves. One might win these competitions or not, however, there is an immense merit even in participating in one.
