How are Universities ranked in THE World University Rankings 2022?
According to the official Times Higher Education website, THE World University Rankings 2022 includes more than 1,600 universities across 99 countries and territories, making them the largest and the most diverse university rankings to date.
It must be noted that the rankings are based on 13 performance indicators that are grouped into 5 major categories – teaching, research, industry income, international outlook, and citations. All the 1,600 Universities are measured across these areas to finally come up with the results.
The US is the most-represented country overall with 183 institutions, and also the most represented in the top 200 (57), although its share of universities in this elite group is falling. The University of Oxford topped the list for the sixth consecutive year, while mainland China has two institutions in the top 20 for the first time.
Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer, THE, said, “The world’s elite universities have enjoyed a long period of dominance at the top of the table with help from historic reputation, global status, and reliable income. But our data shows us that there are clear shifts happening across higher education around the world. We are already seeing clear disruption to the established norms from mainland China. Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong also show that Asia is continuing to benefit from the focus and investment in higher education across the continent.”
