Why GSK E^3 2020 turned out to be an enriching experience -By team R Cube from MDI Gurgaon

After winning the campus round, we were super excited for the national round of GSK E^3 2020. The national finale was extremely enriching, and we were absolutely thrilled to see the different solutions. One look at the problem statement made us pretty excited. It was well defined and the supporting material was quite informative. We realized this would be a great opportunity to learn about the healthcare industry, which COVID-19 had vastly disrupted.

Stepping into the competition

We left our first group meeting energised and motivated to crack the case of GSK E^3 2020. The week after flung by, with the three of us compiling research and ideating. Each of us had an area of strength, be it design, research or assessing viability, and our initial submission was a culmination of it all.

The campus round of GSK E^3 2020 came soon enough. We polished our presentation and rehearsed through the night. We patiently listened to each team and waited for the results, heart in our hands. And it then happened. We won! The three of us were visibly exhilarated and grateful.

Making it to the grand finale

We started our prep for the finals the very next day, which is when we got in touch with our mentor, who was an immense support and helped us understand the nuances of the industry and company where research lacked. Thus began a week of long nights, which almost always started with quarrels, went on to discussions and planning of work for the next day, and ended with rants about life.

A total of 6 teams made it to the finale of GSK E^3 2020. We particularly liked the presentations of the teams from IIM Lucknow and IIM Ahmedabad. Their solution was impressive and their work reflected extensive research.

Extensive research, proof of concept and putting together a financial viability analysis was the theme of work. Moving forward at a good pace, gaining a good deal of understanding about the pharma industry along the way, we entered into the finals, with participants from some of the best colleges in the country.

Challenges we faced in the virtual setup

Communication was a major problem. It was difficult to sync our schedules and find enough time when all three can sit on the case. There were many instances where we had an argument over a proposed solution. Giving each other enough time to explain their thoughts and having an open mind towards the point of views of other members helped.

By the end of the grand finale of GSK E^3 2020, despite not winning, we were content. The process had left its mark. We are much better versed with the industry, richer in terms of experience and our case solving abilities. Above all, our bond of friendship had strengthened over time.
