Why MBA case competitions are worth the hype!
Case competitions are gradually gaining popularity among MBA graduates. Such corporate competitions not only test them on grounds of their creativity but also help recruiters assess a number of skill-sets. Students get a chance to work on real-life problems faced by businesses around the world which stirs their thinking beyond the four walls of a classroom. But apart from the learning opportunity and the handsome prize money that these MBA case competitions provide, there are various reasons why they are absolutely worth the hype.
MBA case competitions help build a student’s practical approach. They get to know how companies work, what problems they face, and how they can be solved. Students mostly are required to work in teams to participate in such competitions and they comprise several levels before the final stage.
In India, case competitions have become a major highlight of an MBA graduate’s college life. The 2 years in the course provide students with ample opportunities to make mistakes and learn in a simulation of the real-life scenario that these competitions provide. Here are the reasons why MBA case competitions are worth participating in, whenever you get the chance.
Job offers from the biggest names in the industry
MBA case competitions test students on a number of aspects. Students are required to identify a problem, devise a marketing plan, estimate the budget for it, apart from everything else. Based on real-life scenarios of companies, recruiters believe these competitions to be a good breeding ground for prospective employees. Many competitions in India including Tata Imagination Challenge and Hindustan Unilever Lessons in Marketing Excellence (HUL L.I.M.E) offer students Pre-placement interviews along with assured prizes. Some of these are not just meant for the winners but are also offered to finalists.
This is a big positive in the importance of MBA case competitions. These competitions are held in a variety of B-schools and not just the closed cluster of the elite ones. Apart from IIMs, these competitions are held in B-schools all over India. Not only that, some of these invite applications from other disciplines and even undergraduate students. This serves as a great opportunity for students in tier II and tier III colleges, who otherwise might not land job opportunities from famous names in the industry.
The only thing that matters to win such competitions is the grit and talent to solve cases. Thus, MBA case competitions provide students with a platform where all of them have equal space and equal opportunity, irrespective of their college and other credentials.
Rewards and international exposure
This is an obvious advantage. MBA case competitions come with huge prizes for students. Colgate Transcend, a famous MBA case competition, hands out cash prizes up to 3 lakhs to the top teams, hampers from Colgate along with Pre-placement interviews. Likewise, Google case study competition also allocates prizes worth 2.5-3 lakhs for the winning teams along with PPIs. Some of them also conduct these competitions internationally, and thus, give students a chance to compete with international teams.
A great addition to the CV
MBA case competitions not only provide a great learning experience but also look good on your CV. Most recruiters are well-versed with the framework of these competitions, and thus, are always on the lookout of individuals who have gained some hands-on experience of ideating and resolving issues of the major players in the market. They know that such a candidate would require less training and probably would already be aware of the basic structure of the corporate world. So even if the candidate is someone with no work experience, his/her exposure through case competitions prepares him for a job.
Exposure like no other
One of the most important advantages of MBA case competitions is the industry exposure the students get. Throughout these competitions, the teams interact with senior management, HR managers and other mentors of the organising companies. They are guided in their work during all the stages.
Even if students do not win, they learn a whole lot more about how big companies work in real life. And the good part is that participants here are allowed to make mistakes. Any shortcomings or any discarded idea serve as lessons that will help them on the job later in life, where mistakes can turn out to be very costly.
Not only that, they also get a hands-on experience of utilising every theoretical lesson they’ve learnt in class. These competitions are no less than simulation exercises. MBA case competitions are a great way to look into the real world, where all strategies, research tools are applied and tested while devising newer methods. These competitions foster creativity and interaction between teams and the panel judging these teams. With newer ideas meeting at one platform, such exposure is bound to become beneficial for everyone participating.
