Caterpillar Autonomy Challenge: Stages and Timelines

Video Submission Round

This will be a non-competitive round. All the teams who are able to submit a video of a proper working rover will get through. Make sure to use a decently rough terrain to showcase the robustness of the rover. 

All that you need to know about Caterpillar Autonomy Challenge

A team can have a maximum of 12 STUDENTS from any discipline and from any institute. Participant’s creations should resemble rovers but need not use space-grade components. This competition establishes the groundwork by evaluating the rover's capacity to autonomously navigate, dig sand and construct berms elsewhere.

Competition details:

  • Video Submission Round : This is an online round. Participants have to submit a video of thier working rover. This is a non competitive round. All the teams with a genuine rover will move to the prelims. The video submission form will be opened after registration closes.
  • Preliminary Round : This is an offline round. Teams will have to traverse through an obstacle free track, excavate sand and construct berms. Further details of this round will be communicated after video submission round. 
  • Grand Finale : This is an offline round. Each team will have 2 attempts(15mins each). This round invovles 3 tasks: Navigation throught the obstacles , Sand Excavation, Berm Construction. These tasks can be performed by automation or telebotic control and will be scored accordingly. See problem statement for further details.

Rules:

  • Arena will be 9mx5m. Robot should be within an envelope of 1.5mx0.75mx1m. Maximum mass is 80kg.
  • The robot must have an easily accessible kill switch for safety.
  • The rover must exhibit at least one level of autonomy as mentioned in the problem statement.
  • No physical access to the rover will be allowed one the run starts.
  • The rover must not have GPS or IMU-enables GPS systems for navigation purposes.
  • Beacons and markers maybe placed in the arena in accordance with the rules in the problem statement.
