A decisive factor in a building’s health and structural integrity is the quality of its plumbing system. Keeping this in mind, The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) signed an agreement with the Indian Plumbing Association to introduce Plumbing as a vocational course in Engineering and Architecture colleges across the country.
According to the clause, this will be a 4-credit course that can be opted by students pursuing a degree in the fields of engineering, architecture or interior design. The course can also be taken up by graduate students whose core field was mechanical, civil or environmental engineering.

What exactly is the Plumbing Course?
Following the pact, AICTE and IPA have directed approved educational institutions to prepare the facilities for providing plumbing course to students. The institutional faculty will be trained by the IPA to handle the course.
The course period is estimated to be 50 hours that is divided into theory and practical lessons. The division will be of the form 80% theory and 20% practical.
In a press statement, AICTE Chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe said, “There is a strong felt requirement of the plumbing curriculum in engineering and architecture curriculum as it leads to the health of a building. The IPA and the AICTE have collaborated to create a 50-hour plumbing course that would be 80 percent theory and 20 percent practice,".

The course will be introduced in the next academic year and also has the provision of being taken as a minor degree.
