The British Council recently announced the British Council Scholarship for women in STEM 2023. Under this scheme, there are 26 scholarships/ fellowships reserved for women from South Asian countries including India. One of the primary motives of the British Council is to refine UK’s presence and global relationships with over 100 countries. Through this venture, it aims to provide women in STEM with opportunities to help them gain skills, connections, and confidence to transform their lives and the world in collaboration with the UK.

British Council Scholarships For Women In STEM: Details

There are two schemes under the scholarships 2023- Marter’s Scholarship (for women pursuing postgraduate study) and Early Academic Fellowship (for women pursuing higher research studies) in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM). 

  • The scholarships are available across 6 UK institutions, namely- the University of Manchester, the University of Bath, Coventry University, Imperial College London, the University of Southampton, and the University of Edinburgh.
  • The scholarships/ fellowships will be awarded on a merit basis.
  • There is no defined country cap within the eligible South Asian nations.
  • The scholarships will cover tuition fees, travel costs, visa charges, and stipends among other things.

Eligibility Criteria For British Council Scholarships

The basic eligibility criteria for applying to these British Council Scholarships for women in STEM are

  1. The candidate must be a woman
  2. Must be a passport holder and a permanent resident of an eligible country
  3. Take up a course of study in the select UK universities, for the academic year September/ October 2023- 2024.
  4. They must demonstrate the need for financial support.

Other requirements for the two different schemes are:

Master’s Scholarship

Early Academic Fellowship

  • Must have an undergraduate degree that enables them to gain access to a pre-selected postgraduate course at a UK university.
  • Must have completed all components of their Ph.D. in the last 3 years. 
  • Have a plan for the research activities to be undertaken during placement, and their relationship to your Ph.D. or previous work, to show how this will contribute to your career development.

How To Apply For The British Council Scholarships For Women In STEM

Candidates who meet the requirements must apply for the scholarship/ fellowship directly to the participating universities. Note that candidates can apply for more than one university and course. Visit the official website for more information on universities, courses, etc.

Note that the deadline for application to the scholarships will vary. Check the respective university deadlines and apply for the scholarships.
